  • EU Aims to Strengthen Defence Spending Amid Rising Tensions

EU Aims to Strengthen Defence Spending Amid Rising Tensions

On Tuesday, European Union president Ursula von der Leyen urged EU countries to spend more on their defence. She warned that with Russia being more aggressive and support from the United States declining, Europe needs to take charge of its own security.

In a speech to EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, von der Leyen declared that the era of depending on America for complete protection is over. She demanded immediate action, saying, “We need a surge in European defence. And we need it now.”

Recently, EU leaders agreed on a plan to raise around 800 billion euros (about 860 billion dollars) to boost defence spending. The plan includes providing loans up to 150 billion euros and changing rules to let countries spend more on defence items.

Von der Leyen emphasized that these loans should be used to strengthen Europe’s defence industry. “These loans should finance purchases from European producers,” she mentioned.

The rising tensions with Russia, particularly due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict, add to the urgency. Because the US’s role in NATO is uncertain, European governments feel pressure to enhance their military capabilities.

In her speech, von der Leyen said, “Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted but only deterred.” She added that Russia spends more on its military than all of Europe combined.

“This is the time to build a European Defence Union that ensures peace through unity and strength,” she stated confidently.

Additionally, the commission is looking into allowing member states to use funds originally meant for less wealthy countries to support their defence efforts. A summit in Brussels next week will continue these discussions, with plans for a white paper that outlines more ways to boost EU defence financing.

In the EU parliament debate, many lawmakers supported the idea of borrowing together for more defence funding, a move previously avoided by countries like Germany.

  • Market Update: Sensex Falls Slightly, Nifty Rises Amid Mixed Signals

Market Update: Sensex Falls Slightly, Nifty Rises Amid Mixed Signals

On Tuesday, the stock market had a rough day. The Sensex, which is a key measure of stock performance, dropped just a little — by 12.85 points, closing at 74,102.32. However, the Nifty, another important index, rose by 37.60 points to finish at 22,497.90 thanks to some strong performances in the real estate sector.

The market was cautious because Wall Street had a tough day before, with worries about the U.S. economy slowing down. Even though the banking sector struggled, especially IndusInd Bank, which fell over 27% due to problems with its accounting, other banks like ICICI Bank helped offset some losses.

Real estate stocks did well, with increases of up to 7% for companies like DLF and Godrej Properties. Meanwhile, oil companies saw their stock prices rise between 1.4% and 3% after some good news about lower crude oil prices.

On the global stage, markets showed some signs of recovery after a big drop, especially on Wall Street, where the tech-heavy Nasdaq had its worst day in over two years. The Indian rupee also gained slightly, boosted by a weaker U.S. dollar.

In oil news, prices went up as concerns about a possible U.S. recession kept investors on alert. Meanwhile, foreign investors sold shares worth Rs 485.4 crore, while domestic investors bought shares worth Rs 263.5 crore.

Jaipur School’s Holi Ban: Safety or Controversy? Here’s What Happened

A private school in Jaipur, St. Angela Sophia School, has sparked controversy for telling students not to bring colors or celebrate Holi at school. Rajasthan’s education minister, Madan Dilawar, criticized this decision and wanted the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to take action. He said Holi is an important festival in India and it’s sad that students were warned they might not be allowed to take exams if they celebrated.

After receiving backlash, the school’s principal, Sister Cynthia, explained that the rule was meant to protect students from synthetic and chemical colors, which can cause allergies or harm. She assured everyone that Holi would still be celebrated at the school on March 12, after exams, using only natural colors and flowers.

Sister Cynthia emphasized that the main goal was to keep students safe during exam season. She stated, “We want our students to enjoy Holi without any risks. Our celebration will be safe, using flowers instead of harmful colors.”

Holi is celebrated in the month of Phalgun, with Choti Holi on March 13 and the main celebration on March 14.

  • Exciting Eco-Friendly Cruises Coming to the Yamuna River

Exciting Eco-Friendly Cruises Coming to the Yamuna River

Get ready for a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the Yamuna River! Soon, a 4-kilometre area between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur will welcome exciting river cruises using electric and solar-powered boats. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Delhi government are teaming up to make this happen, with an official agreement expected to be signed soon.

    Enjoy a Green Adventure!

These new boats will hold 20 to 30 passengers and will come with special features like bio-toilets, safety life jackets, and systems to make announcements. They are designed for safety and comfort so everyone can have a great experience. To help with smooth boarding, two new jetties will be built.

An IWAI official said, “This project is all about boosting tourism and creating a new, fun river experience for everyone.” The aim is to turn the area between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur into a popular spot for visitors while keeping it eco-friendly.

Working Together for a Great Outcome

This exciting plan involves multiple government groups. The agreement will include the IWAI, the Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Delhi Jal Board, and the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Together, they hope to make this part of the Yamuna a favorite place for tourists and locals alike while keeping it safe for the environment.

This area is part of National Waterway (NW) 110, which is just above the Wazirabad Barrage. The project aims to encourage short boat trips and fun activities on the water, making it easier for both visitors and residents to enjoy the river.

    Turning Dreams Into Reality

The idea of water transportation on the Yamuna has been around for a while. Back in 2018, a plan for water taxis was proposed, covering a longer stretch from Wazirabad to Fatehpur Jat. However, some environmental issues raised concerns, so the project was reviewed. In 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) suggested looking into the ecological impact on Delhi’s main drinking water supply.

Despite these challenges, interest in water transport remained strong. Last September, IWAI invited businesses to show interest in operating ferry services along an 8-kilometre loop between Sonia Vihar and the Wazirabad Barrage. The boats need to be electric or solar, be able to carry 20 to 30 passengers, and travel at a speed of 5 to 7 knots.

A Step Towards a Cleaner Future

Officials believe this project will change tourism in Delhi for the better. An IWAI official said, “It will improve tourism by providing sustainable travel options.” By using clean energy boats, this initiative aims to reduce pollution and offer a cool alternative to regular transportation. If this project is successful, it might lead to even more river-based transportation ideas, connecting waterways into Delhi’s tourism and transport network. When these cruises start, they’ll provide beautiful views and show that Delhi is committed to being green and modern!

  • Trump Accuses Canada of Tariff Abuse Over Electricity Price Hike

Trump Accuses Canada of Tariff Abuse Over Electricity Price Hike

On Monday, President Donald Trump called Canada a “tariff abuser” after Ontario raised electricity prices for three U.S. states. Trump said the U.S. doesn’t need energy from Canada anymore.

“Ontario has just put a 25% tax on electricity,” Trump said, claiming that Canada shouldn’t be allowed to do this. He added that the U.S. will not pay for Canada’s products anymore.

“We don’t need your cars, lumber, or energy, and soon you’ll see that,” Trump said.

These comments came after Ontario announced a higher export tax that affects around 1.5 million American customers in Minnesota, New York, and Michigan. Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford, warned he might increase the tax or even cut off electricity if the U.S. retaliates.

“I feel bad for the American people who didn’t start this trade war; it’s all President Trump’s fault,” Ford said.

Trump has previously suggested absorbing Canada and caused confusion in trade between the two countries since he took office, according to reports.

  • Kremlin Warns Against False Hope in U.S.-Ukraine Relations

Kremlin Warns Against False Hope in U.S.-Ukraine Relations

The Kremlin warned Russians not to get too excited about recent actions by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine. Speaking at a school in Moscow, spokesman Dmitry Peskov told people to avoid seeing things only in a positive light. He mentioned concerns about Elon Musk possibly cutting off the Ukrainian military from his Starlink internet service, as well as Trump’s recent choice to stop military aid to Ukraine.

“Don’t rush to think everything is great,” Peskov said. “We should hope for the best, but also be ready for tough times. We need to protect our own interests.” His warning came as U.S. officials were set to meet with Ukrainian leaders in Saudi Arabia, partly to see if Ukraine would agree to make any concessions to Russia to help end the war.

Peskov stated that Russia is still achieving its goals on the battlefield in Ukraine, no matter what the U.S. decides. He claimed that Ukraine has so many weapons that it can keep fighting for months, even with the pause in U.S. military support.

  • Rishabh Pant: Play for India First, IPL Will Follow

Rishabh Pant: Play for India First, IPL Will Follow

Rishabh Pant, the famous Indian wicket-keeper, believes that while the Indian Premier League (IPL) is exciting, young cricketers should always aim to play for their country first. Pant, who was part of India’s Champions Trophy winning team but didn’t get to play, made his international debut in 2017.

“When I was a kid, my only dream was to play for India. I never thought about the IPL. Now, everyone is focusing more on it. The IPL is great, but if you want to play for your country, everything else, including the IPL, will come later,” Pant shared in an interview with JioHotstar.

He is grateful for his chance to play for India at just 18 years old. Pant is known for his exciting style of play, even hitting a one-handed six at times. He explained why his bat sometimes slips from his hands. “I hold my bottom hand lightly to keep it from taking control. I grip my top hand tightly. But when I might reach too far—like if the ball is too wide—I’m willing to take risks, even if it’s a 30-40% chance to succeed. In that moment, my goal is just to hit the ball as far as I can,” he explained.

Pant also mentioned that doing gymnastics as a kid helped him in cricket. “My gymnastics coach always said it would be useful. Our fitness trainer once thanked him, saying what I learned still helps me today,” Pant said. He continues to practice and believes it has greatly improved his fitness for cricket.
