Byju’s Executives Face Major Fines Amid Bankruptcy Crisis

Byju’s, a well-known Indian tech company, is in serious trouble. Vinay Ravindra, the chief content officer, and his ally Rajendran Vellapalath are facing big financial penalties in the US. A judge is looking into their actions of taking money and assets from companies that are under court control.

Last Tuesday, a judge named John T. Dorsey said he might make Ravindra and Vellapalath prove why they shouldn’t be punished for their actions. If they can’t explain themselves, they might have to pay a lot of money in fines. Byju’s owes over $1.2 billion to lenders and bought two US education companies for $820 million a while ago.

Byju’s founder, Byju Raveendran, is dealing with bankruptcy in India after failing to pay US lenders. A Nebraska businessman named William Hailer shared that he spent months trying to help Raveendran regain control of Byju’s US software companies. However, the attempt failed, and he ended up accusing Raveendran of using bad business practices.

The lenders want the judge to punish Ravindra, Vellapalath, and Vellapalath’s tech company, Voizzit, for allegedly taking more than $1 million in cash and valuable resources from the US education companies, Epic! Creations and Tangible Play.

Vellapalath joined the court hearing via video from Dubai. He claimed that Voizzit owned Epic! and Tangible Play, and since Voizzit loaned Byju’s over $100 million in 2023, it had the right to take control. However, the judge did not find his explanation believable.

Byju Raveendran is trying hard to take back control of his struggling education tech company. Meanwhile, he faces accusations of hiding $533 million that should have been paid to creditors. Byju’s is also dealing with financial problems in India, where a court expert is trying to find ways to pay back the lenders.

  • CBSE to Introduce Two Levels for Science and Social Studies in Grades 9-10

CBSE to Introduce Two Levels for Science and Social Studies in Grades 9-10

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is thinking about a new idea: offering two levels of science and social science classes for students in Grades 9 and 10! This plan is similar to what they already do with math in Grade 10, where students can choose between a standard level and an advanced level.

The new idea is just waiting for approval from the CBSE governing body. If it gets the green light, it will follow guidelines from the National Education Policy (NEP). This means some students can study subjects at a regular level while others tackle advanced topics.

A senior CBSE official explained that the goal of this plan is to help students who are good at science and social studies prepare better for the tougher subjects they’ll face in Grade 11.

However, there are still a few things to figure out, like how to organize exams and create the right study materials, since the new textbooks are not yet ready. CBSE is also planning to have two rounds of board exams, but the schedule for that has been delayed.

This idea comes from a report made by a group led by K. Kasturirangan, the former chairman of ISRO, and is designed to support the changes in education proposed in the National Education Policy 2020.

  • Canada Cancels Fast-Track Visa: What It Means for Indian Students

Canada Cancels Fast-Track Visa: What It Means for Indian Students

Recently, there was a discussion in India’s Lok Sabha about Canada’s decision to cancel its Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program. This program helped Indian students get study permits more quickly. The Indian government told everyone that this change would actually make it cheaper for students, especially those who found it tough to pay the higher costs of the SDS.

The SDS program started in 2018 and let students from India and several other countries speed up their study permit applications. However, to use this fast-track option, students had to meet certain rules. They needed to pay for one full year of tuition ahead of time, show they had a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $20,635 to prove they had enough money, and show they could speak English well.

But on November 8, 2024, the Canadian government ended the SDS program. They said this move was to ensure that all students had equal chances in the application process and to make it fair. After this cancellation, all international students, including those from India, will now apply for a “regular study permit” instead.

Under the regular process, students no longer need to pay for a whole year of tuition upfront. They now just need to pay for six months of tuition and show they have enough money to cover their living costs. This change is expected to help many students who previously found the SDS program too expensive.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, there are about 427,000 Indian students currently studying in Canada. The Indian government is continuously discussing issues that Indian students face in Canada to ensure their well-being.
