Bihar Appoints New VCs for Four Universities Amid Changes

On Thursday, Raj Bhawan appointed new vice chancellors (VCs) for four universities in Bihar. These positions were filled after being managed by temporary leaders since August 2004. The appointment for a fifth university, which will be vacant on January 14, will take place later.

Sanjoy Kumar, who was the pro-VC at Nalanda Open University, has been named the VC of Munger University. Prof. Vivekanand Singh from NIT Patna is now in charge of Purnea University. Both of these universities were run by interim leaders since August 2024.

For Nalanda Open University, Prof. Ravindra Kumar, who teaches Philosophy at Patna University and was also a former pro-VC at BRA Bihar University in Muzaffarpur, has been appointed as the new VC. He will replace the old VC, KC Sinha, who left in August.

These appointments were made by the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of state universities, after discussing with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Also, Dr. Inderjeet Singh has been appointed as the VC of the Bihar Animal Sciences University, which was previously managed by the Bihar Agriculture University VC.

The new VCs will serve for three years starting from when they take office. According to a former VC, the selection considered both qualifications and the social aspects, showing the government’s intentions during election season.

Meanwhile, Aryabhatt Knowledge University VC Sharad Kumar Yadav has been given temporary charge of Pataliputra University starting January 15.

In August 2024, Raj Bhawan had put three state universities under temporary management until new VCs could be appointed. The chancellor’s office had called for applications for VC positions in June 2024, and interviews were completed while the previous Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, was in office.

  • Bihar Minister: BPSC Exam May Be Canceled if Irregularities Found

Bihar Minister: BPSC Exam May Be Canceled if Irregularities Found

Bihar Minister Dilip Jaiswal, who is also the president of the BJP in the state, recently talked about the ongoing controversy over the 70th combined competitive exams of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC). He mentioned that if the current investigation uncovers any wrongdoing, the exam could be canceled. “The exam has already happened, but the inquiry is still going on. If we find any irregularities, we may cancel the whole exam. The government hasn’t ruled that out yet,” he said.

His comments come as protests are growing, especially after the arrest of poll strategist Prashant Kishor. Many politicians, like Purnea MP Pappu Yadav, are calling for a strike or ‘bandh’ in Bihar on January 12. A group of opposition leaders from parties like RJD, Congress, and the left has also asked the Governor for an independent investigation into the BPSC issues.

On the same day, the Supreme Court declined to hear a petition asking for judicial action regarding the alleged irregularities in the BPSC exam, telling the petitioners they should go to the High Court instead.

Jaiswal criticized opposition parties for trying to use the students’ protests for their own political advantage. He pointed out that these politicians lack any real issues to discuss, so they are trying to take over the student movement. “I urge BPSC candidates to trust the government and the BPSC, and not get confused by misleading information,” he said.

He also criticized Prashant Kishor, calling him a “professional dramatist” who is out for personal gain. “He used to advise political leaders and now wants to do politics with money,” Jaiswal added
