NASUWT Votes for Strike: Push for Fair Pay for Sixth Form Teachers

A teaching union is asking its members in sixth form colleges to vote on whether to strike for better pay. The NASUWT union wants a fair pay raise for sixth form teachers for the year 2024/25. This comes after another union, the National Education Union (NEU), held protests for better pay in colleges that are not academies.

The UK Government announced in July that teachers in regular schools will get a 5.5% pay raise this school year. The Sixth Form Colleges Association (SFCA) said teachers at non-academy colleges will get a 3.5% raise from September 2024 to April 2025, while teachers at academy colleges will receive 5.5% starting in September 2024—seven months sooner than their peers.

The NASUWT union believes this pay difference is unfair and should not be accepted. They are currently running a vote that will close on February 10, where members can decide if they want to take action.

Patrick Roach, the NASUWT general secretary, stated, “For over ten years, sixth form college teachers have faced pay cuts. Now, they are starting the school year without a pay hike like their school teacher colleagues.”

He criticized the SFCA for its decision to pay non-academy teachers less than the academy teachers when they do the same job. Last week, the SFCA stopped a legal case against the government after it agreed to provide funds for college teacher pay raises. The government committed £50 million to support pay increases for sixth form and further education colleges for 2024/25.

However, the fight for fair pay is still not over. The NEU and the government are still in discussion, and now the NASUWT members might also join in on taking action. Roach added, “We will not accept unfair treatment and want all sixth form teachers to get the same pay raise of 5.5%, no matter where they work.”

STF Busts Cheating Ring: 2 Arrested in Army Exam Scandal

In a big win for the police, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) arrested two men who were caught cheating on the Territorial Army General Duty Clerks and Tradesmen Recruitment exam on January 12, 2025. The arrests happened at the Dogra Regiment Center in Ayodhya with help from the Military Intelligence.

The two suspects are 19-year-old Vikas Rai from Varanasi and 30-year-old Sukhnandan Yadav from Betul, Madhya Pradesh. The police found two mobile phones, two exam papers, two admit cards, and two secret devices used for cheating.

Recently, there have been rumors about cheating gangs in Uttar Pradesh working to help people pass exams unfairly. The STF has been watching these gangs for a while. They set up a special team in Ayodhya to gather information and catch the cheaters.

When the STF learned that these men would try to cheat during the exam, they acted quickly. They were caught using electronic devices that helped them get answers during the test. During questioning, the men said they paid a solver gang ₹4 lakh each (about $4,800) to pass. They even made a down payment of ₹40,000 (around $480) before the exam.

The cheating devices were small and easy to hide in their ears. The men were in communication with the solver gang, who were giving them answers remotely. After their arrest, the Ayodhya police started legal actions against them. The police continue to look for other members of the cheating gang and learned about a leader named Satyam Madhesia.

In a similar situation, a man was arrested in Mumbai for cheating during a police recruitment exam by using a hidden electronic device. Authorities became suspicious because he was touching his ear often. When they checked, they found a tiny Bluetooth device inside his ear, which was allowing someone else to tell him the answers.

  • “How to Ace ‘Tell Me About Yourself’ in Job Interviews

“How to Ace ‘Tell Me About Yourself’ in Job Interviews

When you go to a job interview, you might hear the question, “So, tell me about yourself.” This question sounds easy, but it can be tricky because it’s so open-ended.

What should you say? Should you talk about your life, your last job, or your skills? Here are some tips to help you answer this common question.

Focus on the Job, Not Your Life

Remember, your interview is about showing why you are a great match for the job. The interviewer has already seen your resume, so you don’t need to repeat what’s on it. Think of the interview like a performance where you show how you can fit into their team.

Career coach John Lees suggests imagining that the interviewers are picturing you working with them. You don’t need to share personal stories or hobbies right at the start. Save those for later in the interview when there’s time for more casual conversation.

    Know What They Want

To give the best answer, read the job description carefully. Look for important phrases such as “required” or “must have.” Make sure to highlight these qualities in your answer.

Less important phrases such as “preferred” can take a backseat, even if you meet them. Pay close attention to what the company needs from this role. The job description might also give clues about whether the work environment is fun or serious.

Check the “About Us” section on the company’s website to learn about its culture and values.

Write down three key qualities they are looking for by completing this sentence: “They’re looking for someone who…”

    Show You Fit the Need

Start your answer with phrases like “I’m someone who…” or “At work, my approach is…” Use your work experience to show how you meet the specific needs of the job you’re applying for. If possible, choose an example that is similar to the new job.

Practice your answer out loud before the interview. This way, you’ll be ready to show why you are a valuable candidate. This approach will help you stand out from other applicants, as you won’t just talk about yourself; you’ll explain why you matter to the organization!

  • A Simple Guide to Answer ‘Tell Me About Yourself’ in Interviews

A Simple Guide to Answer ‘Tell Me About Yourself’ in Interviews

Job interviews often start with the question, “So, tell me about yourself.” It might sound simple, but giving a good answer can be tricky because it’s wide open. So, what should you do? You don’t need to talk about your life or hobbies right away; instead, focus on what the employer is looking for.

    1. Know What the Company Needs:
Before your interview, read the job description carefully. Look for important phrases like “must have” or “required.” These show what skills they want. You can learn about the company’s culture by visiting their website, especially the “About Us” section.

    2. Show You Are a Perfect Fit:
Start your answer with phrases like “I’m someone who…” or “At work, I…” Use a specific example from your past job that matches what the company needs.

    3. Prepare and Practice:
Think about your answer ahead of time. Practicing will help you feel more confident during the interview.

By using this approach, you’ll impress the interviewers and show them why you’re the best choice for the job.

  • BPSC Sends Legal Notices Over Exam Allegations Amid Student Protests

BPSC Sends Legal Notices Over Exam Allegations Amid Student Protests

The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) has recently sent legal notices to several people, including politicians, who have made what it calls “baseless” claims about a test held on December 13. This test is part of the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) in Bihar.

Rajesh Kumar Singh, the Examination Controller of BPSC, mentioned that they are taking action against those who are making false allegations. He stated that more notices will be sent out soon.

One of the people who received a notice is Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraaj Party. Kishor is accused of making untrue statements about the BPSC and must provide solid evidence within seven days to back up his claims. He recently stated that job positions were sold for amounts between ₹1 crore and ₹1.5 crore, claiming a scam worth over ₹1,000 crore.

Another person served with a notice is Khan Sir, a well-known tutor and YouTuber from Patna. He expressed sadness over this action but confirmed that he will continue to fight for the students who are protesting against the BPSC.

In response to these events, Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, has called for a Bihar bandh (strike) on January 12 to support students who want the BPSC exam canceled.

Students protesting against the exam have been receiving support from various leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav and Prashant Kishor. They are looking for support from Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, about the future of the exam.

The BPSC exam has been facing scrutiny due to rumors of question paper leaks. In response to these allegations, the government has ordered a new test for over 12,000 candidates who took the exam at a center in Patna.

Despite all these issues, students are organizing marches to voice their concerns about the exam and continue their fight for justice.
