  • Remembering Manmohan Singh: A Leader and His Unbreakable Friendship”

Remembering Manmohan Singh: A Leader and His Unbreakable Friendship”

Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Among many touching stories about him, one that really stands out is his emotional reunion in 2008 with his childhood friend, Raja Mohammad Ali, from Pakistan.

Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in a village called Gah, in Punjab, which is now in Pakistan. His life changed forever because of the Partition in 1947. During this time, his family had to leave their home and friends to move to India.

When he became Prime Minister in 2004, his old friend Raja Mohammad Ali was inspired to reach out again. The two had been very close friends in their childhood and were schoolmates. Raja used to call him “Mohna.”

In May 2008, after many years apart, the two friends met in Delhi. Their reunion was filled with hugs, laughter, and fond memories, making it feel like no time had passed. They exchanged thoughtful gifts to celebrate their friendship that has survived through time and distance. Raja gave Singh a picture of Gah and brought soil and water from their hometown. In return, Singh gifted Raja a nice watch set, a scarf, and a turban.

Many people, including leaders from different political groups, are paying tribute to Singh after his passing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered him as a “great leader” known for his kindness and wisdom. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi also honored him, calling him a “mentor” and praising his courage. Manmohan Singh will be remembered as India’s first Sikh Prime Minister and the first leader to be re-elected after a full term since Jawaharlal Nehru. His simple and thoughtful leadership will always be an important part of Indian history.

The exchange of gifts between Manmohan Singh and Raja Mohammad Ali shows how friendship can overcome borders and challenges.

  • U.S. Stocks Slip Before Christmas as Investors Cash In

U.S. Stocks Slip Before Christmas as Investors Cash In

U.S. stocks finished the week before Christmas with some price drops after having a great year. Many investors decided to take profits as trading slowed down before the weekend. Despite a small loss on Friday, the U.S. dollar was on track for a nearly 7% increase this year. This rise was due to hopes for strong economic growth and plans for tax cuts and less regulation from President-elect Donald Trump, which made the Federal Reserve careful about lowering interest rates until 2025.

As trading on Wall Street started to slow down, popular tech stocks like Tesla, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia lost value. The S&P 500 dropped 1.11%, but it still had a slight gain for the week. The Nasdaq fell 1.49%, while the Dow Jones lost 0.77%. For the whole year, the Dow gained 14%, the S&P 500 rose by 25%, and the Nasdaq increased by 31%.

Some experts believe huge funds are selling stocks and buying bonds as the year ends, which might explain the recent market drops. The global share index and Asia-Pacific shares also saw slight declines.

Overall, there might be some potential for the bull market to keep going, but it could be limited. The U.S. dollar value slightly dropped on Friday but still showed gains this week and for the year. The euro remained steady with a 5.6% loss for the year because of actions from the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan.

Investors are also keeping an eye on U.S. Treasury yields, which rose due to expectations of higher interest rates. Gold prices dropped a bit but had a strong yearly performance. Oil prices went up as people awaited news on China’s economic stimulus. Bitcoin also saw a slight decrease.

“Indian Army Rescues Tourists Stranded by Heavy Snow in Gulmarg

The Chinar Warriors, part of the Indian Army, came to help when tourists got stuck in Gulmarg, a popular place to visit, because of very heavy snowfall. The roads were blocked, making it hard for people to leave.

Responding quickly, the Army helped evacuate 68 people, which included 30 men, 30 women, and 8 children. They also provided food, shelter, and medical care to 137 tourists who were stuck.

The Indian Army shared this on social media, showing how they answered the call for help. In another rescue, they saved a pregnant woman in Kulgam district during the snowfall. The rescue team reached her quickly and took her to the Government Hospital in Yaripora.

On Friday, Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, announced that around 2,000 vehicles were stuck in Qazigund due to the heavy snow and mentioned that they were working on clearing the roads. Srinagar and nearby areas welcomed winter with their first snowfall of the year, and more snow was expected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) mentioned there might be light rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir until December 30.

Mahakumbh 2025: World Records Await with 500,000 Eye Check-ups

In 2025, Mahakumbh is going to make history in many ways! Organizers plan to set four different world records, including the biggest gathering of devotees ever. One exciting record aims for over five lakh people (that’s 500,000!) to get their eyes checked all at once, with 300,000 pairs of glasses given away.

A special area called “Netra Kumbh,” measuring about 10 acres, will open on January 5. This will allow people to receive free eye check-ups. If anyone needs surgery, it will be available at local hospitals after the event.

Dr. Ranjan Bajpai, part of the organizing committee, shared that the Netra Kumbh will be opened by Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Avdheshanand Giri Maharaj, the chief guest. Gaurang Prabhu Ji Maharaj will also join as a special guest.

Last time, a lot of people got their eyes tested, but this year, the goal has doubled! They want to check five lakh people with 10,000 eye checks happening each day! Many doctors from 240 big hospitals across India will provide their help. They even arranged dorms for the doctors so they can rest and eat food from their own regions.

The Netra Kumbh covers 10 acres and has 11 large tents this time (last time there were only 5). The process for eye checks will be organized, with patients registering first before meeting the doctors.

Doctors will work in small groups, ensuring everyone gets the care they need. There will also be a special area for distributing high-quality glasses.

Finally, to follow in the footsteps of the great Emperor Harshvardhan, a donation camp for eye donations will be set up. Last time, over 11,000 people donated their eyes, helping those in need of corneal transplants.

This year’s Mahakumbh is not just about gathering; it’s about giving the gift of sight!

In March, Greg missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997 due to family health concerns.
