Supreme Court to Review 25,753 Teacher Appointments in West Bengal

On Monday, the Supreme Court will look at some appeals challenging a decision made by the Calcutta High Court. This decision said that 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff members in West Bengal’s government and aided schools were wrongly appointed. The Supreme Court’s Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar will hear the case.

In a previous hearing, some people argued that the High Court’s ruling negatively affected the lives of honest candidates who were appointed correctly. The Chief Justice agreed that it’s essential to find a balance between fixing wrong appointments and protecting those who got jobs fairly. He suggested that if possible, cases should be arranged to help innocent candidates first.

There are 124 petitions waiting to be discussed in the Supreme Court, including one from the state government. Last December, the court asked why the West Bengal government created extra posts for teachers instead of removing those who were supposedly hired illegally.

On May 7, 2023, the Supreme Court paused the High Court’s order about the teacher appointments but allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to keep investigating. The court determined that if it finds any teachers or staff were appointed wrongly, they would have to return their salaries.

The Supreme Court noted that in May 2022, the state government created 6,861 extra teaching positions to help those who were on a waiting list. More than 23 lakh people applied for the 24,640 vacancies during the State Level Selection Test-2016, and 25,753 appointment letters were issued.

  • Trump’s New Immigration Rules: Challenges for Indian Immigrants Explained

Trump’s New Immigration Rules: Challenges for Indian Immigrants Explained

Donald Trump returning as the 47th President of the United States is causing worries for many immigrants, including thousands of Indians. Right after he took office on January 2, 2025, Trump made a big change: he signed an order to cancel “birthright citizenship.” This means that babies born in America won’t automatically become citizens anymore.

In an interview, Meera Shankar, a former Indian ambassador to the US, said this decision feels unfair and shows a sense of fear among white Americans. She explained that Trump has a strong plan for his second term, especially since he has support from the Senate, House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court, which lean towards his ideas.

Shankar noted that Trump’s focus on illegal immigration will affect countries like India. She mentioned that India’s government is willing to take back around 18,000 Indian migrants living in the US illegally. But, finding and verifying these individuals might be hard since many don’t have proper documents.

In total, around 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the US, with about 725,000 of them being Indians. This larger number raises concerns about how both countries will handle possible deportations. Shankar highlighted that mass deportations could look bad for the Indian government but would likely please Trump’s supporters in America.

She also pointed out that Trump has mixed opinions on programs like the H-1B visa, which allows skilled workers from other countries, including India, to work in the US. Some believe these programs take jobs from Americans, while others argue they help fill important job gaps in the country.

Overall, Shankar feels we are entering a tough and uncertain time with Trump’s new leadership. He can change his mind quickly and has a strong desire to make changes fast.

Andhra Pradesh’s Bold Plan for Demographic and Economic Transformation

Andhra Pradesh is getting ready to create a new plan called “demographic management” to handle important changes happening in the state. These changes include fewer babies being born, more older people living here, and families becoming smaller. This was said by Governor S Abdul Nazeer on Republic Day in Vijayawada.

The Governor explained that as the number of young workers decreases and the population ages, the state needs to be proactive. He talked about the need for a public discussion on how these changes affect everyone. The government wants to invest in better healthcare, social security, and support systems for families and communities.

He also mentioned the challenges the state faced when the previous government mismanaged money and resources. This left Andhra Pradesh in a difficult position with lots of debt and stalled projects. But now, the public has shown strong support for the current government led by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu.

Looking ahead, Andhra Pradesh’s economy is expected to grow significantly, reaching a value of Rs 305 lakh crores by 2047. This growth means that the average income in the state could go from Rs 2.68 lakh to Rs 53.34 lakhs over 24 years.

To help with water management and agriculture, the government plans to use new technologies like AI, drones, and satellite tools for better crop monitoring and irrigation. This is all part of a vision called Swarna Andhra 2047, which aims for a better future for everyone in the state.

Top 5 Government Schemes for Free Education in India

APJ Abdul Kalam once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” To help every child get this weapon of education, the Government of India has created several programs that offer free education to all kids, no matter their background. Here are five important government programs that make education free for everyone:

    1. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA): Launched in 2001, this program aims for every child in India aged 6 to 14 to get quality elementary education. It works closely with state and local governments to ensure every child gets a chance to learn.

    2. Samagra Shiksha: This program covers education from preschool all the way to class XII. It ensures that all children can access good education and have a fair learning environment, considering their diverse needs and backgrounds.

    3. CBSE Udaan Program: This program helps girls in classes 10 and 12 prepare for engineering entrance exams. It provides free online and offline resources, such as study materials and special classes, to help girls succeed in their future studies.

    4. Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA): This program works to increase the number of secondary schools within easy reach of every home. It also aims to improve the quality of secondary education, making it available to everyone regardless of gender, background, or disabilities.

    5. Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV): Launched in 2004, this scheme sets up residential schools for girls from disadvantaged families, especially those from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and other minority groups. It helps them move smoothly from elementary to secondary education.

In addition to these national programs, many state governments also offer free education schemes. For example, in Tamil Nadu, there is a Free Education Scheme that started in 2012 to support students from backward classes in paying for their college education, covering all necessary fees.

These programs reflect India’s commitment to providing free and quality education for all children, ensuring that every child can pursue their dreams and change the world.

  • Controversy Surrounds Mamta Kulkarni’s Role as Mahamandleshwar

Controversy Surrounds Mamta Kulkarni’s Role as Mahamandleshwar

Himangi Sakhi Maa, a transgender leader, has spoken out about former actress Mamta Kulkarni being named Mahamandleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada during the Maha Kumbh festival. Himangi Sakhi raised concerns about Mamta’s past, saying, “Many people remember her controversies, including a time she was in jail for drugs. Now, she suddenly appears in India, attends the Maha Kumbh, and gets this important title. We should investigate this.”

Himangi stressed that appointing someone like Mamta as a guru raises ethical questions. “What kind of leader are we giving to Sanatan Dharma? Someone who doesn’t deserve such a title is being made one,” she added.

On the same day, Mamta Kulkarni performed ‘pind daan’ at Sangham Ghat in Prayagraj. She told ANI, “This was the order of Mahadev and Maha Kaali. They picked this day for me. I didn’t do anything.”

Laxmi Narayan, the head of Kinnar Akhada, announced Mamta’s new spiritual role. He said Mamta has been connected with them for over a year and a half. “She can express herself in any devotional way she wants,” he explained.

Mamta Kulkarni rose to fame in the 1990s with movies like ‘Karan Arjun’ and ‘Baazi,’ acting alongside stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. However, she left Bollywood in the early 2000s and has been living a quiet life abroad.

School Denies Secret Service Entry Due to ICE Fears: A Closer Look

On Friday morning, officials at Hamline Elementary School in Chicago didn’t let federal agents inside because they thought the agents were from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Later, it was confirmed that the agents were actually from the Secret Service, who were investigating a threat against a government official.

Two agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) tried to enter the school around 11:15 a.m. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova said the agents showed their DHS badges. An ICE spokesperson confirmed that this was not an encounter with ICE.

The Secret Service said the agents first visited a home nearby before heading to Hamline Elementary. They identified themselves to the principal and left without any problems. “We check on threats against the officials we protect; we don’t handle immigration issues,” explained Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

CPS officials followed their safety rules to keep the kids safe and did not let the agents talk to any students or staff. A district spokesperson stated that safety is always a priority, no matter what part of Homeland Security is involved.

Recently, acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman allowed ICE agents to arrest people near sensitive places like schools and churches, changing a rule that used to limit enforcement actions in those areas.

Principal Natasha Ortega told the media, “We will not let ICE in our school. We are here to protect our students and ensure they have a good education.

  • FIITJEE Faces Mass Resignations and Class Closures Amid Payment Issues

FIITJEE Faces Mass Resignations and Class Closures Amid Payment Issues

One of India’s oldest coaching centers, FIITJEE, is facing big problems. Teachers are upset with the management because they haven’t been paid for six months and have been skipping classes. This made a lot of teachers resign, leaving many centers closed when students need help the most, right before important entrance exams.

Recently, several FIITJEE locations shut down, including those in Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Varanasi, Lucknow, Pune, and Kolkata. Many parents whose kids go to these centers have complained to the police. Because of the sudden closures, many parents had to enroll their children in other coaching centers or online platforms, especially as students get ready for the next JEE (Mains) in April. The first round of these exams just finished.

FIITJEE was started in 1991 by DK Goel, an IIT-Delhi graduate. Students at FIITJEE said that teachers have not been showing up for their classes, which made things chaotic. This led to a fight between the teachers and the management, which then caused teachers to leave when the school didn’t pay them. Some teachers have joined other institutes for better pay, and others are thinking about starting their own coaching centers.

In Noida’s Sector-62 and Ghaziabad, just before shutting down, students were told to join classes at Aakash, another popular coaching center. One FIITJEE center in South Kolkata, which was doing really well until recently, closed suddenly without telling anyone and merged with another coaching center. Parents of students at these centers said their kids told them that teachers were not coming to class and later announced they were resigning because they weren’t being paid.
