Floods in Florence: Red Alert as Heavy Rain Causes Chaos

Heavy rain caused rivers to overflow and flooded streets around Florence, Italy, on Friday. Authorities issued a red weather alert for Florence and told people to stay indoors. Eugenio Giani, the leader of the central Tuscany region, warned residents to be very careful as intense rain was expected all day.

Due to the bad weather, popular places like the Uffizi Galleries, a famous museum, and the Duomo church closed early. Firefighters shared pictures of cars almost submerged in Sesto Fiorentino, a town north of Florence. There were over 500 firefighters helping in Tuscany, with many emergency efforts planned or already underway.

A local weather expert stated that about 60 millimeters of rain fell in Sesto Fiorentino between 6:00 AM and noon. To put that in perspective, Florence usually gets about 70 millimeters of rain in the entire month of March. This means that a month’s worth of rain fell in just six hours!

Schools, parks, and cemeteries in Florence and nearby Prato were closed after warnings were issued on Thursday. Giani mentioned that they opened floodgates to reduce pressure on the Arno River, which runs through Florence and Pisa. The river was expected to reach its highest level in the early evening.

Alessio Mantellassi, the mayor of a nearby town called Empoli, said this situation is worse than a past flood in 2019 and is one of the toughest times they have faced. In Pisa, soldiers helped by placing sandbags to protect against the flooding.

Nearby, in Emilia Romagna, authorities also issued a red warning because heavy rains had already swollen rivers there. The president of Emilia Romagna stated there was very strong weather on Friday morning and warned everyone to stay alert, as the area has faced floods in the past. Scientists have cautioned that climate change makes extreme weather events like floods more likely.

How CAR T-Cell Therapy Trains Your Body to Fight Cancer

Imagine if your body could learn to fight cancer like dogs are trained to find bombs. Normally, your immune system helps protect you from diseases, including cancer. But sometimes, cancer tricks the immune system by pretending to be a part of your body, which makes it hard to notice.

This is where CAR T-cell therapy comes in. Think of it as giving your immune system special glasses that help it see the bad guys—like cancer cells. Here’s how it works: doctors take some of your immune cells, teach them to recognize cancer in a lab, and then put them back into your bloodstream. Now, your body’s own soldiers can spot and fight the cancer more effectively!

  • Shahjahanpur’s ‘Laat Sahab’ Procession: A Colorful Tradition

Shahjahanpur’s ‘Laat Sahab’ Procession: A Colorful Tradition

In Shahjahanpur, some kids threw stones at the ‘Laat Sahab’ during a celebration on Friday, but the police quickly stopped them. Superintendent of Police Rajesh S explained that the ‘Laat Sahab’ celebration started at Kunchalal, went by Phoolmati Mandir and Town Hall, and ended back at Kunchalal. At the Khirni Bagh intersection, a group of five or six kids threw colorful powder (gulal) and even shoes at ‘Laat Sahab’ before throwing a stone. The police were there and chased the kids away.

When asked if the police used force, the SP said no. He mentioned that the procession first went to the Phoolmati Temple for prayers and then to the Kotwali, where ‘Laat Sahab’ was honored. During the event, ‘Laat Sahab’ asked a police officer about the crimes that happened throughout the year, and the officer gave him a bottle of liquor and some cash.

Many people joined in the celebration, throwing shoes while cheering for ‘Laat Sahab.’ The police set up strong security around ‘Laat Sahab’s bullock cart. The SP also noted that there were 18 other processions during this celebration, with two being especially important.

To ensure the mosques along the route stayed clean, about 20 of them were covered with tarps, and barriers were put near mosques and electrical transformers. For the first time, a special celebration took place in the district jail, where they made a statue of ‘Laat Sahab’ after prisoners requested it. They had fun throwing colors at each other.

This celebration began in 1728 when Nawab Abdullah Khan played Holi with the people of Shahjahanpur. Over time, the tradition changed to picking an unknown person as ‘Laat Sahab,’ painting their face black, and parading them on a bullock cart while throwing shoes. Historian Dr. Vikas Khurana mentioned a court case in 1990 to stop the parade, but the court allowed it to continue, calling it an old tradition

Swiatek Triumphs Over Zheng, Advances to Indian Wells Semi-Finals

Iga Swiatek showed her strength by easily beating her rival Zheng Qinwen in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells tournament on Friday. Swiatek won the match 6-3, 6-3. Last year, Zheng beat Swiatek in the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics, making this victory even sweeter for her.

Swiatek replied that losing in the past motivated her to do better this time. “For sure it does,” she said. “It’s always tough to lose, and you want to prove that you can win.”
