Supreme Court Dismisses Women’s Reservation Law Challenge

On Friday, the Supreme Court decided not to hear challenges against a law that gives 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. The court said that if people disagree with the law, they can go to the high court.

The case was brought by Congress leader Jaya Thakur and an organization called the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW). They want to remove a rule that says the law can only start after a census and new boundary drawings (delimitation). They believe women should get their reservations right away.

Justice Bela M. Trivedi, who led the court, questioned the petitioners about their claims. He asked what basic right was being violated. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, who spoke for NFIW, argued that it isn’t fair to tie women’s reservations to delimitation. He said this goes against the right to equality in the Constitution (Article 14).

The court responded that this law is a significant step forward since many earlier attempts to reserve seats for women never became laws. They emphasized that the law is now in effect and suggested that concerns about its constitutionality should be taken to the high court.

The government lawyer, Kanu Agarwal, explained that the timing for when the law starts is up to the legislation. He criticized the petitioners for not clearly showing how this law violates the Constitution. He also noted that Jaya Thakur’s petition was pointless since the law was already passed in September 2023.

Thakur’s petition tried to show that only 4% of women in the country are represented in assemblies, which she called an urgent issue. However, the court stated that her petition was no longer valid since the law had already been enacted.

Overall, the Supreme Court dismissed both petitions, allowing the petitioners, including Thakur, to take their concerns to the high court instead.

Government Declines New Inquiry into Grooming Gangs; Action Ahead

A government minister has said no to a call from a senior Labour politician for a new nationwide investigation into grooming gangs. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy disagreed with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who wanted a fresh inquiry into historical child abuse in places like Oldham and Rochdale. However, Nandy said the government is open to another investigation in the future if it is needed.

Ministers are currently focused on acting on recommendations from a major inquiry led by Professor Alexis Jay. This inquiry, which lasted seven years, looked at child abuse cases and has not yet been fully implemented.

In a recent TV interview, Nandy acknowledged Burnham’s concerns but disagreed with him. She pointed out that the national inquiry was meant to address the problems Burnham highlighted, such as the failures to protect young victims, particularly those who are female and from working-class backgrounds.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warned that starting a new inquiry might slow down important actions to tackle child sexual abuse. Meanwhile, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans to enforce mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse, which will be detailed soon.

Burnham stated that while he supports a new inquiry, he believes it should draw on previous reviews to better understand national issues. He stressed the need for a national investigation that could compel people to testify.

On Wednesday, MPs voted down a proposal from the Conservative Party for a new national inquiry into grooming gangs, which Burnham felt was the right decision. He noted that while discussions are ongoing, survivors of abuse might still have differing opinions on whether a new inquiry is really required.

Nandy said it’s crucial to act on survivors’ experiences and recommendations already provided, rather than reopen old wounds without results. She also mentioned that new information about child abuse often comes to light over time, so they might consider another inquiry in the future if necessary.

  • DUP Demands Fair Review of Windsor Framework for Northern Ireland

DUP Demands Fair Review of Windsor Framework for Northern Ireland

The leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Gavin Robinson, has made it clear that the upcoming review of the Windsor Framework should be a genuine assessment, not just a way to hide problems. This week, the UK Government announced that Lord Murphy, a former Northern Ireland and Welsh secretary, will lead this review.

This decision comes after the Stormont Assembly voted to extend post-Brexit trading rules in Northern Ireland for another four years. Lord Murphy has promised to listen to people’s problems with these trading arrangements. However, Robinson stressed that there should be more urgency in addressing unionist concerns.

The debate and vote in December were important because they allowed local leaders to have a say on trade rules affecting Northern Ireland. The Windsor Framework, which replaced the Northern Ireland Protocol, requires checks and paperwork for goods coming from Great Britain into Northern Ireland. This has created a lot of controversy, as many unionists believe it threatens Northern Ireland’s status in the UK.

The recent vote didn’t need support from both communities to pass, which means the UK Government now has to start the independent review. Lord Murphy will report back in six months. Robinson sees this as a chance to highlight the harm caused to Northern Ireland and is concerned that the recent Assembly vote ignored the principle of sharing power across communities.

He pointed out that the Windsor Framework and the last government’s plans didn’t achieve all their goals or fix many of the problems from the previous protocol. Therefore, the DUP will continue its push to fully restore Northern Ireland’s position in the UK, including ending the influence of EU laws that create barriers between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Robinson also mentioned ongoing issues where rising costs for manufacturers and extra paperwork are making it hard for businesses in Great Britain to sell to Northern Ireland.

Lord Murphy, when speaking on a BBC show, expressed hope that his findings would get support from all parties. He acknowledged that a review was necessary precisely because there wasn’t cross-community support in the recent vote.

    D. Gukesh: The 18-Year-Old Chess Champion Ready for 2025 Challenges

D Gukesh has made history by becoming the new world chess champion! The 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster won the title by defeating Ding Liren, the defending champion, during a thrilling match in Singapore last December. The championship came down to the 14th and final game, where it seemed Liren was in control. However, he made a big mistake on the 55th move and had to resign, making Gukesh the youngest world champion ever.

After his win, Gukesh received a lot of praise from many people in the chess world, but he also faced some criticism from well-known players like Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik.

Siddharth Jagadeesh, who is Singapore’s youngest Grandmaster, remembers playing against Gukesh when they were younger. He shared a story from an under-9 tournament when Gukesh offered him a draw even though he was winning. Jagadeesh accepted the draw because it would give Gukesh first place and the Candidate Master title.

Reflecting on Gukesh’s recent match, Jagadeesh mentioned, “After my game ended, I’d watch Gukesh’s match. Being there gives you a sense of the game’s excitement, but watching from home can be different. You don’t really see what they are thinking.”

In February, Gukesh is set to compete against chess legends Viswanathan Anand and Carlsen in a tournament in Germany and will also participate in the Norway Chess 2025 tournament in May, where he’ll face Carlsen again.

  • Elon Musk’s Funny Bedside Table: A Diet Coke Confession!

Elon Musk’s Funny Bedside Table: A Diet Coke Confession!

On Thursday, tech billionaire Elon Musk shared a funny problem he has on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). He posted a photo of his messy bedside table, which looked like a little shrine to his favorite drink—Diet Coke. The picture showed lots of Diet Coke cans, a glass of water, and some headphones. Next to his bedside table were a pair of black boots. Musk jokingly wrote, “I have a drinking problem.”

In another post, he made the joke funnier by saying he should switch to glass-bottled Diet Coke because it feels better and tastes great.

Many fans reacted to his post, poking fun at his love for the drink. One person joked, “Diet Coke is evidence of MAGAing!” while another said, “I see a glass of water! It’s a good start.” Others pointed out the messiness of his room. A user wrote, “I can help you fix everything wrong with it,” showing that people were paying attention.

Musk’s love for Diet Coke isn’t new. He’s shared before how much he enjoys it, even calling it “awesome.” He once said, “Diet Coke & Coke Zero are awesome. I don’t care if drinking gallons of it shaves a bit of life off. Worth it.” Interestingly, this fun post reminded people that Diet Coke contains aspartame, which has been linked to health issues like strokes and even cancer, according to the World Health Organization.

  • Interpol’s New Silver Notice: A Major Step in Fighting Laundering

Interpol’s New Silver Notice: A Major Step in Fighting Laundering

Interpol, the international police organization, has introduced a new tool called the Silver Notice to help find and track illegal assets that criminals have hidden in other countries. This is happening as part of a pilot project that includes 52 countries, such as India.

The first Silver Notice was issued at Italy’s request to locate the property of a mafia member. Interpol has different types of color-coded notices. For example, the Red Notice is used to ask for the capture of fugitives, and India has many people wanted for financial crimes.

The Silver Notice can help India find criminals’ hidden wealth in places where they thought it would remain secret. This project allows each participating country to request information about 500 assets linked to crime activities such as fraud, corruption, and drug trafficking.

Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza said that removing criminals’ money is a strong way to fight crime. About 99% of criminal assets are still missing, so tracking and seizing this money can make it harder for criminals to operate.

Every Silver Notice will be checked by Interpol to make sure it follows their rules. During the test phase, details of these notices won’t be published on their website. The new Silver Notice system will last at least until November 2025 and aims to help countries recover stolen money and properties safely.

  • PIA Resumes Flights to Europe After Four-Year Ban: Safety and Future Uncertain

PIA Resumes Flights to Europe After Four-Year Ban: Safety and Future Uncertain

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the country’s state-owned airline, has started flying to Europe again after a four-year stop due to safety issues. On Friday, a flight took off from Islamabad to Paris, making PIA the only airline offering a direct route to Europe.

Shumaila Rana, a 38-year-old teacher from Germany, shared her feelings, saying, “This is my first time flying with PIA. I’m nervous and anxious, but I hope the flight goes well.”

PIA was banned in June 2020 from flying to the European Union, UK, and USA after a tragic crash in Karachi killed nearly 100 people. Investigators said the crash was caused by mistakes made by the pilots and air traffic control. There were also claims that many PIA pilots had fake licenses.

In 2016, another PIA plane caught fire due to an engine failure, leading to over 40 fatalities.

Recently, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency lifted the travel ban, stating they now trust Pakistan’s aviation authority to keep flights safe. However, PIA still cannot fly to the UK or the USA.

The airline currently serves various destinations within Pakistan and to the Gulf and Southeast Asia.

Hopes are high for PIA, which employs around 7,000 people. The government wants to sell the struggling airline and has been looking for a buyer. However, a previous deal fell through when a buyer wanted to pay much less than what was being asked.

In 2023, PIA reported losses of $270 million and had nearly $3 billion in debts, which is five times more than what their assets are worth. This year, many domestic flights were canceled because the airline couldn’t afford fuel.

PIA was created in 1955 when the government took over a struggling airline. It grew quickly but started having financial problems in the 1990s.
