Trump Mocks World Leaders and Announces New Tariffs on Pharma
Recently, Donald Trump poked fun at world leaders who are eager to strike trade deals with the U.S. He claimed, “These countries are calling us up, kissing my a,” suggesting they’re desperate to reach an agreement. At a fundraising event for House Republicans on April 8, Trump joked that these leaders were pleading with him, saying, “Please, please sir make a deal. I’ll do anything.”
He also criticized Republicans who want Congress to handle trade negotiations, emphasizing, “You don’t negotiate like I negotiate.”
Right after his comments, the White House revealed that tariffs on Chinese imports would jump to 104% starting April 9. An official explained this decision followed Trump’s warning of a 50% increase unless China removed its own tariffs on American products by Tuesday.
During the gala, Trump shared plans for new tariffs targeting the pharmaceutical industry. He stated, “We don’t make our own drugs; they come from other countries. The same medicine can cost ten times more here in the U.S. We’ll impose tariffs on pharma so companies will rush to set up shop here instead of China and other countries.” He believes that since the U.S. is a big market, companies will be eager to open their factories in the United States soon. -
Governor Acharya Explains the Power of the RTI Act in Assam
Guwahati, Assam: On Tuesday, Assam’s Governor, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, talked about how the Right to Information (RTI) Act helps connect everyday people with the government, making big changes in society. At a special event, he opened the 32nd meeting of the National Federation of Information Commissions in India and shared his thoughts on the importance of transparency in democracy.
He explained how the RTI Act, introduced in 2005, has changed the way democracy works in India. “The RTI Act is like a bridge that connects people to the government. It lets everyone ask questions and get answers, showing that the people are in charge,” Acharya said.
The Governor emphasized how the RTI Act helps make things clearer, fights corruption, improves services, and holds the government accountable. He also noted that rural and less fortunate communities have gained a stronger voice because of this law.
Acharya stressed that as information spreads quickly today, it’s vital to make the RTI Act easier to use online. He wants to ensure that asking for information is simple and a part of daily life. “We need to raise awareness about the RTI Act and use technologies like AI and data analytics to keep it effective,” he added.
He highlighted the need for more community events like workshops to educate and empower people, especially those in villages. Chief Information Commissioner Heeralal Samariya and delegates from different states were also at the meeting. -
VHP Defends Waqf Bill Amid Opposition from Muslim Leaders
On Tuesday, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) criticized those who are against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. They said that any group claiming their religious laws are more important than the Constitution is hurting India’s unity and democracy. In a statement, VHP leader Vijay Shankar Tiwari mentioned that some Muslim leaders are trying to confuse the Muslim community after the Waqf (Amendment) Bill was approved by Parliament. The VHP emphasized that India is a country where no religious or caste-based group should ignore the Constitution.
Last week, Parliament approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill after a long discussion. Many opposition parties argued against these bills, saying they were unfair to Muslims. However, the government believes these changes will help minority communities. President Droupadi Murmu approved both bills on April 5.
Now, many petitions, including ones from politicians and groups like the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), are being filed in the Supreme Court to challenge the Waqf (Amendment) Act. On Monday, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind called the passage of this Bill a bad day for minority rights. The AIMPLB has said it will work with various religious and social groups to organize a nationwide movement against the Waqf (Amendment) Act until it is completely repealed. -
Explore the Touching Comedy of ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’!
Tom Basden is a talented producer, actor, writer, and composer. His new British comedy film, “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” focuses on the ups and downs of relationships instead of big action scenes or dangerous events. “We didn’t want any wild car chases or murders,” Basden explained. “We believe people will really connect with this story.”
The movie, which came out in theaters on March 28 and is distributed by Focus Features, has roots going back to 2007. This was when Tim Key and Tom Basden created a short film called “The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island.” This short film was popular, getting nominated for a BAFTA and winning the best British short film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Both the short film and the new feature tell the story of an aging folk singer named Herb McGwyer, played by Tom Basden. He is hired to perform a special show on a quiet Welsh island. When Herb arrives, he finds out that he is only playing for one person, a lottery winner named Charles, played by Tim Key.
The new film includes Carey Mulligan as McGwyer’s ex-girlfriend and musical partner, Nell Mortimer. This adds more depth to the story about relationships. “In other movies, it’s obvious what happens to the main characters. In ours, it’s different. I just want him to like me,” Key shared.
Music plays a big role in the film. Charles listens to popular songs from Herb and Nell’s band. Basden wrote all the music for the fictional folk band. “It’s important to show that he is a real musician,” Key said. -
Assembly Chaos: Sajad Lone Questions NC’s Handling of Waqf Act Discussion
Sajad Lone, the leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, criticized the National Conference (NC) government for not allowing a discussion on the Waqf Act in the assembly. He suggested that if the NC thinks their own speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, is blocking discussions, they should replace him with a new speaker. Lone said, “If the NC believes we should talk about it, then just change the speaker. Otherwise, it feels like a show.”
He pointed out that there have been other important resolutions that were ignored and questioned why they are ignoring discussions now. Sajad Lone even argued with some NC members in the assembly.
Chaos erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly when members demanded to discuss reforms related to the Waqf Board. PDP MLA Waheed Para was removed from the assembly after he and other members tried to bring attention to the issue during the session. An NC MLA, Altaf Kaloo, wanted to speak but was ignored, which led to more arguing.
Afterward, Waheed Para shared his disappointment with reporters, saying it was sad that issues affecting the Muslim majority in Jammu and Kashmir are being overlooked. He urged all MLAs to back the resolution put forth by his party, the PDP, saying, “If the 60 MLAs here don’t support our resolution on the Waqf Act, future generations will remember this.” -
