Supreme Court Questions Uttar Pradesh’s Harsh Gangster Act in Ongoing Case

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court said that the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act seems very harsh. This statement came while they were looking into a case of a man who disagreed with a May 2023 ruling from the Allahabad High Court, which turned down his request to stop the ongoing legal proceedings against him in a Kasganj district court. The Supreme Court judges, Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, said they would examine the case further after admitting the appeal.

Last November, the Supreme Court had already asked the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to this situation and told them that no serious action could be taken against the man while they were looking into it. The man’s lawyer argued that he was being unfairly charged under the 1986 Act for illegal mining in the Ganga River. He pointed out that he had been accused twice for the same thing.

The state’s lawyer referred to the 1986 Act, suggesting that it needs proper consideration. The Supreme Court mentioned that there is also a separate case about the constitutionality of some parts of this Act, which they will review. The man’s lawyer stated that he was wrongly accused and that the charges against him were based only on another case where his name wasn’t even mentioned. On November 29, the Supreme Court decided to look at the separate matter regarding the Act’s rules and asked the Uttar Pradesh government for its opinion.

Hero Electric Appeals Court Ruling on FAME-II Subsidy Investigation

Hero Electric has taken action in the Delhi High Court against a decision made by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The ministry has asked for a Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to look into claims that Hero Electric wrongly received money from the government’s FAME-II program, which provides support for electric vehicles. The Ministry of Heavy Industries also asked Hero Electric to pay back Rs 130 crore because they believe the company did not follow the rules of the program.

During the court hearing on Wednesday, Justice CD Singh advised Hero Electric to talk with the ministry to work out the problem peacefully. While this is happening, the court told the government not to take any action against Hero Electric until they check on the progress of these talks. The next hearing has been set for December 20, 2024, allowing time for both sides to find a solution. The FAME-II scheme, which stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, is a program by the government to encourage the use of electric vehicles by giving financial help.

  • Taliban to Ban Women from Nursing Programs, Deepening Healthcare Crisis

Taliban to Ban Women from Nursing Programs, Deepening Healthcare Crisis

Afghanistan is likely to stop women from joining nursing and midwifery courses, according to reports from different schools. This move comes after an order from the Taliban’s leader. A health ministry official said this ban will make the country’s healthcare problems even worse. “We already have a lack of doctors and nurses. This will only make it harder,” they said.

So far, there has been no official announcement, but two health ministry officials shared this news with BBC Afghan. Videos showed students crying after hearing this. Health officials recently met in Kabul to discuss this news with school leaders.

“In the meeting, they told us that girls can’t study in our schools anymore,” explained a public health ministry official. They weren’t given much information and were simply told to follow the leader’s order. One school director said many leaders were present at this meeting. Some staff members are confused about this new rule.

Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, they have already prevented girls from going to secondary schools and universities. This has led to worldwide criticism, with many calling it “gender apartheid.” Health training schools were among the few places left for women to learn, and now women make up most of the students in these programs.

There are about 10 public and over 150 private health schools in Afghanistan, offering diplomas in subjects like midwifery and pharmacy. Around 35,000 women are currently studying there.

“This new rule is a huge problem. What will we do with only 10 percent of our students?” asked one school manager.

One midwifery teacher in Kabul received a message from her school telling her not to come to work for now, but they didn’t explain why. “This is really shocking for us. We feel lost,” she said. “This was our only hope after being banned from universities.”

A UK official expressed worry about this decision, calling it “another attack on women’s rights to education” and saying it will make healthcare harder for Afghan women and children.

This ban is the latest in a series of strict rules from the Taliban since they returned to power. In August, they ordered women to wear full-body clothes in public. In October, they said women should not pray aloud in front of others, claiming a woman’s voice should be kept quiet.

The Taliban’s treatment of women is concerning. According to Amnesty International, they have:
    – Stopped girls from going to secondary school
    – Limited women’s job and education opportunities
    – Imposed strict dress codes
    – Arrested women and girls for “moral corruption”
    – Increased early and forced marriages.

5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Telangana – Tremors Felt, No Damage

On Wednesday morning at 7:27 AM, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Mulugu district in Telangana. The quake surprised many residents, who quickly ran out of their homes for safety. Tremors from the earthquake were felt in several nearby districts.

According to Mulugu’s Superintendent of Police, Shabarish, no major damage has been reported yet. Police teams are currently patrolling the area to assess any impact. The district forest officer, Rahul Jadhav, noted that the shaking was brief, lasting only about 6 to 10 seconds. The epicenter was about 7 kilometers from an area that had already seen fallen trees due to heavy rains. The quake was measured at a depth of 40 kilometers, as recorded by the Bhookamp app.

Security cameras in Bhadrachalam and Mulugu captured the moment of the tremors. Thankfully, even though the earthquake rattled the region, there were no immediate injuries or major damage.

Earthquakes like this aren’t very common in Telangana, but there have been a few before. For example, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit near Ramagundam in April 2020. Prakash Kumar, a seismologist from CSIR-NGRI, confirmed that the earthquake’s epicenter was in the Medaram area of Mulugu district. He explained that while this earthquake was felt strongly, it wasn’t enough to cause serious problems for buildings and structures. Interestingly, people as far away as Hyderabad, around 250 kilometers from Mulugu, felt the tremors too, but only minor vibrations were experienced there.

  • KL Rahul Gears Up for First Day-Night Test Against Australia

KL Rahul Gears Up for First Day-Night Test Against Australia

KL Rahul is excited about his role in the upcoming day-night Test match against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. He knows where he will bat, but the team management has asked him to keep it a secret. This is pretty common in cricket, especially since there has been a lot of talk about his batting position now that captain Rohit Sharma is back.

Rahul didn’t play in the last two Tests against New Zealand because Sarfaraz Khan was performing really well. When he got to play in Perth, he did a fantastic job, scoring 77 runs and helping set a record with his opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal. But with Rohit back, he might have to bat lower down the order again, which seems unfair after his great performance.

Rahul said he had been told early on that he would open the innings when Rohit was on paternity leave. He felt prepared after practicing for it and playing in some practice games. Despite the changing roles in his career, Rahul just wants to play and contribute to the team’s success.

He understands that batting in different positions can be tough, especially at the start of an innings. However, after playing cricket around the world, he feels more comfortable now. The upcoming match will also be Rahul’s first test with the pink ball, and while it’s different, he believes that with more practice, he will adjust well.
