A group of scientists and astronomy enthusiasts in Kolkata has built a new telescope, the largest one in the city! This impressive 14.5-inch f/5 Dobsonian telescope was officially opened on Saturday in Shyambazar, north Kolkata. Two important figures, Prof. Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, the President of the IASES, and IAS officer Abhijit Mukhopadhyay, inaugurated the telescope.
This telescope is unique because it is handmade and showcases both skill and science. The main part of the telescope is a large parabolic mirror, which was carefully crafted right in Kolkata, according to Dr. Sudipta Sasmal. He is one of the co-founders and an associate professor at IASES.
The telescope is a joint project between the Observational Astronomy Centre (OAC) and the Institute of Astronomy Space and Earth Science (IASES). It will help scientists study bright variable stars, watch for exciting space events like novae or supernovae, and observe planets in detail.
The glass used for the telescope’s mirror came from an old ship porthole from the Kandala shipyard. After shaping and grinding, the mirror was polished and coated in Delhi to make sure it gives excellent views of the night sky.
Biswajit Bose, a member of the OAC, has set up the telescope on his rooftop. He highlighted India’s history of scientific creativity, especially among local researchers who find smart solutions with limited resources.
The creators hope to inspire students and astronomy fans in Kolkata to enjoy watching the sky. Even with the city’s light pollution, Bose’s team successfully took beautiful pictures of space using this new telescope.

Boycott Walmart: Join the Movement This April!
A group called the People’s Union USA is planning to boycott Walmart for a week, from April 7 to April 14. This has become a trend as people in the U.S. are getting more active about how companies handle issues like fairness and equality.
The People’s Union already organized a boycott against Nestlé and Amazon. Just recently, on February 28, they did a one-day economic blackout that affected many stores, including Walmart. Another blackout is planned for April 18.
The People’s Union USA does not consider itself a political party. They say they are a movement to help people gain control over the economy and the government. Their Walmart boycott will focus on Walmart’s websites, their brand products, health services, delivery services, and more.
In February, Walmart noticed a 5% drop in website visits, but this might be more about how people buy things these days than any specific change.
The People’s Union USA shared their thoughts: “No matter your politics, we can all agree that corporate greed and corruption hurt our country.”
This boycott comes after Walmart lost $22 billion in value recently. CEO Doug McMillon warned that if customers lose trust in Walmart, it could hurt the entire retail industry, especially if the economy keeps getting worse.
They encourage people to shop locally and wait for items if they can’t find them nearby: “We are cutting the cord.”
Some users on X (formerly Twitter) shared their thoughts, with one person saying, “I just did a boycott of Amazon, and now I’m on to the next one: Nestlé and Walmart.” -

Five Arrested for Trading Protected Snakes in Kerala
On Thursday, forest officials in Payyannur, Kerala, arrested five men for having a protected snake called the two-toed sand boa (Eryx johnii) without permission. This snake is protected by law, which means you can’t catch or sell it.
The men arrested were: Pradeepan (49), Bhikesh (39), Manoj (30), all from Trikaripur in Kannur, and T Naveen (35) and K Chandrasekharan (37) from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. They were caught after officials received a tip-off about their illegal activity.
A team led by Sanoop Krishnan, the Taliparamba Forest Range Officer, carried out the operation and took away a car and a scooter they were using. The snakes were reportedly brought from Andhra Pradesh to sell in Kannur. The forest department has filed a case against them, and an investigation is ongoing.
Earlier in March, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also arrested two men who had 65 turtles, including Indian Roofed Turtles and Spotted Pond Turtles. These turtles are also protected by wildlife laws.
The CBI stated that they found a total of 50 Indian Roofed Turtles and 15 Spotted Pond Turtles. Since these are live animals, they were sent to the Delhi Zoo for safe care.

Experts Warn: Global Recession Risks Rise Amid Trade Tensions
Global companies are worried about a potential recession in the US and around the world after President Donald Trump announced new tariffs (taxes on imports). These tariffs started a few days ago, and more will go into effect on April 9. China quickly responded with their own tariffs, leading to fears of a trade war that might slow down the global economy.
JP Morgan, a big bank, recently raised the chances of a US recession to 60%, up from 40% last month. Other banks like S&P Global and Goldman Sachs also increased their predictions for a recession, noting that the economy isn’t doing well lately. Even HSBC mentioned that signs of a recession are growing, estimating a 40% chance of one by the end of the year.
The new tariffs affect many imports, but not those from Mexico and Canada. The White House claims it’s necessary to fix trade imbalances where foreign countries impose high taxes. After April 9, around 60 countries, including the EU, Japan, and China, will face even higher tariffs on US goods. In response, China plans to impose 34% tariffs on US products starting April 10 and will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
So what is a recession? In the US, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) looks at many factors beyond just GDP (the total value of all goods and services) to define a recession. They say a recession happens when there’s a significant and widespread drop in economic activity lasting more than a few months.
Recessions can be caused by several things, like a sudden spike in key production costs (like oil) that makes everything more expensive. They can also happen when government policies to reduce inflation are too harsh, leading to less spending. Financial instability, like what happened during the 2007 financial crisis, is another major cause. If people and businesses take on too much debt, they might cut back on spending, which further slows the economy.
Overall, major slowdowns in big countries like the US, Germany, or Japan can lead to problems for their trading partners.

Goyal’s Startup Comments Spark Debate on India’s Growth Potential
On Friday, Indian government minister Piyush Goyal accused the Congress party of misleading young entrepreneurs in India. He said they twisted his words from a recent event called the Startup Mahakumbh. Goyal noticed that most people found his advice helpful, except for some Congress members on social media who were trying to create drama.
At Startup Mahakumbh, he questioned whether India should only become a place for delivery jobs. He mentioned that real entrepreneurship involves more advanced fields like robotics and 3D printing, comparing India’s startups with those in China. Goyal expressed the need for India to compete and strive for higher goals, saying that focusing only on food delivery apps was limiting India’s potential.
His comments received mixed reactions, with some Congress members criticizing him, claiming he revealed the struggles of Indian startups. Overall, Goyal believes young Indians can achieve great things if they aim higher.
