The Bombay High Court recently said no to a request asking for rules to stop ticket scalping (selling tickets at inflated prices) for big events. This decision came after concerns were raised about the ticket sales for the British band Coldplay’s concert in Navi Mumbai this month.
According to a report, the Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar explained that the issue was one for the government to solve, not the court. “This is something for the lawmakers and the executive to handle, and the government can create rules to deal with it,” the judges noted. They also encouraged the person who made the complaint to share their concerns with the government.
In his complaint, attorney Amit Vyas said there were problems with how tickets were sold for popular events like concerts and shows. He claimed that during the Coldplay concert ticket sale on BookMyShow, many fans faced issues. For example, before noon on ticket sale day, many fans were kicked off the site and couldn’t buy tickets. The tickets sold out quickly but were later found on other websites for much higher prices.
Vyas also mentioned that these problems happened during other big events like IPL matches and concerts by famous singers like Taylor Swift and Diljit Dosanjh. He claimed that ticket sellers and organizers take advantage of fans by selling tickets at ridiculous prices. Last year, he filed a complaint about this, and the police are looking into it.
