On Thursday, Rajeev Verma, the Chief Secretary of UT, introduced new rules and a checklist to help make college campuses free from drugs. This event took place at the New UT Secretariat and many important officials attended, including Prerna Puri, the Education Secretary, and Anuradha S Chagti, the Secretary for Social Welfare, Women, and Child Development.
Prerna Puri shared that 17 clubs called “Victory against Drug Abuse” (VADA) have been created in Chandigarh colleges. These clubs aim to teach students about the dangers of using drugs. They are part of a national campaign called “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan,” which means “Drug-Free India,” started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2020.
The new checklist will be reviewed every six months to see how well colleges are stopping drug abuse. Verma stressed that similar rules should be made for schools and that there needs to be more teamwork between schools and colleges to prevent drug problems at a young age. He also suggested that surprise visits to college dorms should happen regularly to make sure the new rules are being followed.
