India’s passport has dropped five spots in the global ranking, now sitting at 85th place, according to the Henley Passport Index for 2025. This index tells us how many places people can visit without needing a visa, and it’s based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Currently, holders of an Indian passport can travel to 57 countries without a visa. India is tied with Equatorial Guinea and Niger in this ranking.
On top of the list is Singapore, which has the most powerful passport in 2025. With a Singaporean passport, you can visit 195 countries without a visa! Following Singapore is Japan, with access to 193 countries. Other countries with strong passports include Finland, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Spain, all allowing entry to 192 countries or more.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made impressive gains in the past ten years, now sitting at 10th place with access to 185 destinations—up 32 places since 2015.
On the other hand, the United States has seen a significant drop in its ranking as well, falling from 2nd to 9th place over the past ten years. Experts point out that changing political views in the U.S. have contributed to this decline.
At the bottom of the list, Pakistan and Yemen share the 103rd position, allowing travel to just 33 countries without a visa. They are followed by Iraq, with access to 31 countries, Syria with 27, and Afghanistan, which has access to only 26 countries.
In a side note, there might be changes starting in 2025 that could allow Indian travelers to visit Russia without a visa!
