A new study shows that using natural solutions like fixing wetlands, adding green roofs, and using special pavements can really help coastal cities in India. These solutions are not only great for the environment but also make good financial sense!
For example, if Chennai invests ₹2,203 crore in these natural solutions, it could save ₹505 crore every year by preventing flood damage. This means that the money spent would return in just over four years! Similarly, Mangaluru could spend ₹172.97 crore and start saving money by 2027, with savings of around ₹11.62 crore each year.
The report, called “Urban Greenprints,” from the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) in Bengaluru, says cities need to change how they plan for growth and deal with climate change. The study looked at 23 areas in Chennai and 4 areas in Mangaluru, and it found that there is a lot of potential for using these natural solutions.
For example, by adding green roofs, Chennai could increase green areas by 76%, while Mangaluru could increase theirs by 80%. Using special pavements could help manage stormwater better, making flooding less of a problem.
“Even small investments in green infrastructure can lead to big savings and benefits for the environment,” said Lakshmi Menon, a senior analyst at CSTEP. She explained that as climate change problems grow, building cities that are smart and can handle these issues is necessary, not just a good idea.
The report suggests starting with local communities. They should be informed and involved in pilot projects that show how these natural solutions work. As those projects succeed, the next step is to expand these ideas for bigger changes in city planning.
With threats like rising sea levels and strange weather patterns, these natural solutions offer smart models for other cities wanting to develop sustainably.
