A Republican Congressman, Andy Biggs, has presented a new bill in the U.S. House of Representatives. This bill aims to stop the U.S. from considering Pakistan as a “major non-NATO ally.” According to the bill, the President can only make this designation if Pakistan is truly working hard to fight the Haqqani Network, a group of militants that uses Pakistan as a safe home.
To get this designation, Pakistan must prove a couple of things:
1. It has to show that it is taking real action to stop the Haqqani Network.
2. It must work closely with the Afghan government to keep militants from moving between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
This proposal isn’t new; Biggs first introduced it in January 2019, and he has tried to bring it back in every Congress since then, but it hasn’t moved forward in any of those attempts.
