A stampede occurred on Wednesday evening in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, during ticket distribution for a religious event, resulting in at least six deaths. Many devotees gathered at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple on Tirumala Hills to get tickets for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam event, which starts on January 10.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his sadness over the incident. He shared that it upset him deeply and ordered help for those injured. Thousands of people lined up to get the special tickets, but things got chaotic during the process.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the temple, had set up around 94 counters to give away 120,000 tickets. A sudden push from the crowd occurred when a gate was opened to help an ill woman, leading to the stampede.
TTD board member Bhanu Prakash called the incident unfortunate and promised to take action to prevent such events in the future. Videos of the emergency response, including CPR being given, spread quickly on social media.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed their sorrow over the tragedy and offered support to the victims’ families.
