In a recent interview, Joe Biden, who is 82 years old, said he believes he could have won reelection against Donald Trump if he had stayed in the race. Biden pointed to some polling data and mentioned, “I think yes,” referring to his chances of winning. However, he also acknowledged that he didn’t want to be president when he is 85 or 86 years old, saying, “Who knows what I’m going to be when I’m 86?”

Biden, the oldest president in U.S. history, faced questions about his mental fitness before he decided to step out of the race. He has done fewer interviews and press conferences than any president since Ronald Reagan. USA Today was the only newspaper scheduled for a face-to-face interview before he leaves office.

He addressed some regrets from his time in office but didn’t mention the presidential debate or his promise to be a one-term president. Instead, he talked about misinformation spread by Trump and others and how slow infrastructure projects have been. “We would have been better off if we got some of these projects started faster,” he said.

Biden also mentioned he is thinking about preemptive pardons for people who might be in trouble when Trump returns to power. He warned Trump not to seek revenge against his enemies, saying it wouldn’t help him.

For his legacy, Biden wants to be remembered for helping the economy recover after the pandemic and restoring America’s leadership in the world. He concluded, “I hope history shows that I did it honestly and with integrity.”
