Anupam Mittal, the founder of Shaadi.com, recently reacted to OYO’s new rule in Meerut about unmarried couples. OYO now says that couples must show proof of their relationship at check-in, even when booking online. This means that hotels can choose whether or not to let couples stay together based on local customs.

When the news spread online, Mittal jokingly mentioned OYO on X (formerly Twitter), suggesting that Shaadi.com could offer a discount code for OYO. He even recommended a lottery for couples who met on his site to win a free stay at OYO’s nicer hotels.

OYO’s founder, Ritesh Agarwal, liked Mittal’s idea and said it promotes finding a life partner. Many users on X thought their exchange was funny, with comments like, “Are they planning weddings and honeymoons together?”

OYO’s new rule comes after local groups in Uttar Pradesh asked the company to prevent unmarried couples from staying at its hotels. Because of this feedback, OYO decided that hotels in Meerut should stop letting unmarried couples check in right away. The company might also apply this rule to more cities based on what they hear from locals. OYO has received complaints before about this issue from different groups and residents.
