A recent post on the social media platform X has stirred up a big discussion about the rising salary demands for grooms in India, especially in the IT industry. The post pointed out how young professionals are being pressured and why parents are setting such high financial expectations for their children’s future partners.
One user mentioned, “Life is getting more expensive. With rising medical bills, higher electricity costs, and home expenses, earning ₹25,000 actually puts someone in the top 10% of earners in India.” Another person expressed concern about job cuts and automation, saying that such high expectations for marriage are only adding stress to young people’s lives.
Last year, a woman’s post went viral when she shared her wish list for a future husband. She wanted a groom earning ₹30 lakhs a year and owning a three-bedroom apartment, among other things. In a similar case, a man shared that his friend was turned down in an arranged marriage because of his low salary. A girl refused him, saying she wanted a groom who earned at least ₹25 lakhs a year.
