Rumeysa Gelgi, the world’s tallest woman, recently shared how she travels by airplane and why she has to lie down on a stretcher. In a fun video posted by Guinness World Records (GWR), we see her flying with Turkish Airlines to visit friends in the US and UK.
“I am so excited; my heart is racing!” Rumeysa said in the video, showing how airline staff helped her get on the plane while lying on a stretcher.
But why can’t Rumeysa sit up during flights? In the comments, she explained that she has scoliosis, which is a condition that causes her spine to curve. She has two long rods and 30 screws in her back that keep her spine straight, so she can’t bend or twist it at all. “Laying on a stretcher is the safest way for me to travel by air,” she added.
The reactions on social media have been very supportive. Many fans praised Rumeysa, saying things like, “She’s a lovely lady!” and “Turkish Airlines treated her well.” Another commented, “This woman is a treasure for Turkey!”
In addition to being the tallest woman in the world at 215.16 cm (7 feet 0.7 inches), Rumeysa holds five Guinness World Records. She is not only famous but also a public speaker, activist, and a big fan of reading crime novels.
Her incredible height is due to a rare genetic condition called Weaver Syndrome, which was found out when she was born. She had an unusually large size as a baby. Luckily, her family is very supportive and proud of her, and they do not have this condition.
Rumeysa lives in Turkey and loves spending precious time with her family.
