Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau might quit as the leader of the Liberal Party this week, according to a report from the Mail and Globe. Sources say that party lawmakers will meet on Wednesday, and many are calling for Trudeau to resign.
If Trudeau resigns from the Liberal Party, it could start a competition to find his replacement, and the new leader could also become the Prime Minister.
Trudeau has faced a lot of pressure since Chrystia Freeland, who was his finance minister, resigned on December 16. She wrote a public letter to Trudeau, not holding back in her criticism. Meanwhile, the country’s economy isn’t doing well, and the Liberals are losing support in the polls. A recent Nanos Research survey shows that the Conservative Party is gaining strength as elections approach.
The Liberal Party is worried about losing seats in the next election, so they are running ads warning that the Conservatives might cut social security programs.
Trudeau has been mostly out of sight since Freeland’s departure, having spent much of his holiday at a resort in western Canada. He hasn’t shared any plans about what he’s going to do next. Members of the Liberal Party from border regions pointed out that President-elect Trump’s threats of new tariffs could make Trudeau’s decision even more urgent.
Kody Blois, a leader from the party, expressed concerns about economic instability and fears that a possible 25% tariff on Canadian imports could create problems.
Nik Nanos, who runs Nanos Research, mentioned that if Trudeau steps down, it won’t put him in a strong spot to negotiate with the new U.S. president.
