Delhi experienced very cold weather and a chilly breeze on Monday morning. The temperature dropped to 11.4 degrees Celsius by 5:30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Trains were running late at New Delhi Railway Station due to thick fog in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
The IMD has forecasted a cloudy day with light rain. They predict the temperature will be as low as 11 degrees Celsius and may rise to a maximum of 18 degrees Celsius later in the day.
With the cold weather, many homeless individuals sought warmth in night shelters. Places like Yamuna Bazar and near AIIMS were full, with every bed occupied as the temperatures fell.
People in Delhi gathered around bonfires to stay warm, while others found shelter in night homes. Unfortunately, the air quality in Delhi was rated ‘very poor,’ with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 316.
An AQI score of 0-50 means the air is good, while scores over 300 mean the air is very poor and can be harmful. On Sunday, officials from the Commission for Air Quality Management decided to remove some urgent actions to improve air quality since it had gotten better recently, but more basic measures will stay.
In Kashmir, fresh snowfall took place, affecting many areas, including Srinagar, where temperatures stayed below freezing for two days in a row. Snow was also reported in Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara, Budgam, and Ganderbal.
