Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on September 27, 2023, according to a senior Hezbollah official. The attack hit several buildings in the southern suburbs, resulting in six casualties. Reports claim Nasrallah was attending a meeting of top officials underground when he died.
His death, after leading Hezbollah for 32 years, sparked intense fighting between Israel and Hezbollah that lasted for two months, until a ceasefire began on November 27. As a result of the conflict, many areas in southern and eastern Lebanon experienced heavy damage and unrest.
During a press conference near the attack site, Hezbollah’s security chief, Wafiq Safa, stated that Nasrallah used to command the military actions from that location. He didn’t provide more information about the attack.
The ceasefire agreement established that Hezbollah would move its fighters and weapons north of the Litani River while Israeli troops were to leave southern Lebanon within 60 days. The plan also included bringing in more Lebanese army soldiers and UN peacekeepers to control the area.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah and Lebanon expressed anger over ongoing Israeli strikes and felt that Israel had not adequately withdrawn from Lebanese territories. Israel argued that the Lebanese military should take more action against Hezbollah.
Hezbollah’s new leader, Naim Kassem, warned that if Israeli soldiers do not leave southern Lebanon by the end of the month, their fighters might retaliate. Safa mentioned that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri is scheduled to meet with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein soon to discuss what happens next.
