A serious winter storm is hitting the United States, especially in the eastern regions. Many people are warned about snow, ice, and strong winds causing dangerous conditions. Over 60 million people are in the storm’s path, with some areas in for their heaviest snowfall in ten years.
The weather service issued a freeze warning from the Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic. Governors from states like Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia have declared emergencies and urge residents to prepare for hazardous weather.
This storm will bring heavy snow and strong winds in places like Kansas and Missouri. Some areas could get over 15 inches of snow! In New York and Pennsylvania, lake-effect snow could dump as much as two feet. Washington, D.C., might see five to ten inches of snow, and temperatures could plunge below zero Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius).
Severe storms may happen in the lower Mississippi Valley before the cold sets in. Freezing rain and sleet could make travel very risky, damaging roads and power lines. This means many people might face power outages when it gets extremely cold. The threats in the Appalachian Mountains are even greater since some communities there are still recovering from a hurricane.
Governor Andy Beshear warned that this new storm could create dangerous road conditions and lead to long-lasting power outages just as the cold hits Kentucky.
