Australia’s southeast is going through a really hot time, making the risk of bushfires even worse. On Sunday, temperatures soared, causing officials to enforce fire bans in more areas of Victoria state. This year has been risky for wildfires, with firefighters recently tackling a big fire in Victoria’s Grampians National Park, which destroyed homes and farms. The weather experts say some parts of Victoria could see temperatures reach a scorching 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit), while Melbourne might hit 38 C (100 F). In Mildura, temperatures were already at 32.9 C (91 F) by 10:30 a.m. and predicted to reach 42 C (107 F), which is higher than usual for January.
Due to the extreme heat, total fire bans were put into effect in three areas of Victoria, where the fire danger was labeled as “extreme,” the second highest level. Miriam Bradbury, a weather official, mentioned that the heat would be at its peak in Victoria on Sunday, leading to an increased risk of fires. Other states like Western Australia, New South Wales, and Tasmania were also warned about the heat. Thankfully, a cool change in the weather is expected Sunday night. Unlike the terrible fire season of 2019-2020 that devastated huge areas and affected countless lives, Australia has had calmer fire seasons lately.
