On Saturday, Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, told everyone that the state is keeping a close eye on the news about a large number of people in China getting sick with viral fever and breathing problems. She said not to worry too much for now because no new virus has been found that can easily spread around the world.

Since many Malayalees live in different countries and travel back home, including from China, we need to be careful, she mentioned. The state is ready to act quickly if any sickness starts spreading here. The Minister also advised people, especially pregnant women, children, and older people, to be extra careful and wear masks.

An official explained that the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is watching the flu and other breathing sickness cases in India. They are also talking with global health organizations because of the recent news about a virus called Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. A senior official said they would keep checking the situation for any new updates. Dr. Atul Goel, the Director General of Health Services, added that HMPV is similar to other common cold viruses and might cause flu-like symptoms, especially in young kids and the elderly
