The United States experienced three major tragedies in just 24 hours on New Year’s Day, affecting cities like New Orleans, New York, and Las Vegas. In New Orleans, a military veteran drove a pick-up truck into a crowd of New Year’s partygoers on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and injuring many more. The man who did this has been identified by the FBI as Shamsud-Din Jabbar.
Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel. The explosion tragically killed the driver and hurt seven others. The driver of this vehicle has been named as Matthew Livelsberger.
Authorities are looking into whether these two incidents are connected, as both attackers used a car-rental app called Turo to get their vehicles. Turo lets people rent out their personal cars to others. It started in 2010 and became popular for those who want a different type of rental experience.
In New Orleans, Jabbar rented a Ford F-150 Lightning truck from Turo, which he then drove into a crowd early on New Year’s Day. Turo has said they are helping the FBI with the investigation and expressed sorrow about the events that unfolded, noting that they had no warning signs regarding Jabbar’s background.
In Las Vegas, Livelsberger rented a Tesla Cybertruck through Turo, and it exploded when entering the valet area, taking many people by surprise. The cause of the explosion is believed to be fireworks and gasoline inside the vehicle.
Even though authorities have said these two tragic events are not linked, investigations are still ongoing. Turo has reassured the public that it is collaborating with law enforcement to ensure safety and address the concerns about these incidents.
