On Thursday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) noticed some worrying actions from China. They reported that three Chinese military planes and seven navy ships were seen near Taiwan. These planes crossed an imaginary line that usually separates Taiwan’s airspace from Chinese airspace and entered Taiwan’s southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
The MND shared their findings on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “Three PLA aircraft and seven PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. today. We watched the situation closely and took action.” Just the day before, two Chinese planes and seven ships were spotted, with one plane crossing into Taiwan’s northern and southwestern ADIZ.
Earlier in the week on Tuesday, five Chinese military planes and six navy ships were also reported. Three of those planes entered Taiwan’s airspace. Even on Monday, there were 23 Chinese military planes and six navy vessels operating around Taiwan.
Taiwanese officials are worried about these ongoing military actions, viewing them as a serious threat to both Taiwan’s safety and regional peace. Meanwhile, China insists that Taiwan is part of its territory and aims to reunify, even by force if needed.
Adding to the tensions, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently criticized China’s military buildup, expressing concern over their growing nuclear capabilities and aggressive behavior towards Taiwan.
