There’s a big talk going on about H-1B visas, which allow companies in the U.S. to hire workers from other countries for important jobs. A new survey shows that most Americans think we already have enough skilled workers here and don’t need to bring in more from outside.
According to a poll by Rasmussen Reports done in November, 60% of people believe that we can train and hire Americans for high-skilled jobs. Only 26% support bringing in more foreign workers. This is a hot topic, especially as famous people like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy want to expand the H-1B program to help fill job gaps. But others, like Steve Bannon and Laura Loomer, strongly oppose this idea.
Some big companies, such as Amazon, Google, and Meta, applied for hundreds of H-1B visas in 2024. This move allowed Musk’s company, Tesla, to hire many workers in the U.S. However, in the survey, 59% of people said that businesses struggling to find workers should pay higher wages and try harder to hire Americans, even if it means higher prices for consumers. Only 24% believed that hiring foreign workers would help keep costs down.
In the past, during Trump’s presidency, changes were made to the H-1B program to protect American workers and restrict foreign hiring.
