On Sunday, a passenger jet from Jeju Air crashed while trying to land at Muan International Airport. This terrible accident took the lives of 179 people on board. Only two crew members, who were seated at the back of the plane, survived.
Here’s what happened in the moments before the crash:
– 8:54 a.m.: Air traffic control tells the plane it can land on runway 01.
– 8:57 a.m.: They warn the pilots about birds near the airport.
– 8:59 a.m.: The pilot reports hitting a bird and declares an emergency with a “Mayday” call.
– 9:00 a.m.: The flight begins to circle around to land on runway 19 instead.
– 9:01 a.m.: They get permission to land on the new runway.
– 9:02 a.m.: The plane touches down on the runway.
– 9:02:34 a.m.: The airport starts emergency procedures as they prepare for a crash.
– 9:03 a.m.: The plane crashes into an embankment after going off the runway.
Rescue teams worked quickly, and reports came in about the accident shortly after. South Korea’s government has ordered a full investigation to find out what caused this tragedy. Acting President Choi Sang-mok urged officials to clearly share the investigation results with the families affected.
While some say that the bird strike caused the crash, many experts are confused about why the plane seemed to be going so fast and why the landing gear wasn’t down when it hit the ground.
