Looking back at 2024, it might seem like the Malayalam film industry did pretty well, with some movies getting a lot of attention. However, a report from the Kerala Film Producers’ Association tells a different story.

Mollywood’s Big Loss: ₹700 Crore!

Even though some films like Manjummel Boys, The Goat Life, Aavesham, Premalu, and ARM did really well and made over ₹100 crore each, the overall situation isn’t great. Of the 199 Malayalam films made this year, only 26 turned a profit! The total cost to make these films was ₹1000 crore, but they only made back ₹300 crore, which means a huge loss of ₹700 crore.

One reason for this loss is that making movies and paying actors is getting more expensive. The producers’ association mentioned that they need to get more people back to theaters in 2025. In 2024, many old films like Manichitrathazhu, Devadoothan, and Valiyettan were brought back to theaters and found new fans.

As the year ends, Unni Mukundan’s movie Marco is still doing well at the box office, while Mohanlal’s Barroz is struggling to attract viewers.
