Kolkata – On Sunday, Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress, criticized famous sports and film personalities for not speaking up about the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He called Singh one of India’s “greatest leaders” and said that his leadership helped change India’s economy for the better.
Banerjee expressed disappointment over the silence from these celebrities, suggesting it may come from fear of upsetting the government. He wrote on social media: “It’s surprising and sad that these well-known figures, who are seen as role models, have not even acknowledged Dr. Singh’s death. This shows their priorities and integrity may be questionable.”
Singh, who was 92 years old, received full honors during his cremation in New Delhi, attended by many important people from India and other countries.
Banerjee stated that this “silence” is not new. He mentioned that during past events like farmers’ protests and the CAA-NRC movement, these personalities also chose to stay quiet. He believes this shows a lack of care for the struggles faced by everyday people.
“They made their fame and wealth by gaining public admiration, but they avoid taking a stand when our country needs them,” said Banerjee. He urged people to rethink who they consider role models. He suggested that instead of glorifying those who prioritize their fame over doing the right thing, we should support real heroes like freedom fighters and soldiers.
“The strength of 1.4 billion Indians is huge. It’s time we expect honesty and responsibility from those we look up to. Let’s make 2025 a year where we appreciate those who stand up for justice, democracy, and the well-being of our nation,” he concluded.
