On Saturday, hackers attacked around ten official websites in Italy. This included important sites like the Foreign Ministry and the websites for Milan’s two airports, causing them to temporarily go offline. The cyber security agency of Italy reported this incident.
A hacker group named Noname057, which supports Russia, took responsibility for the attacks. They announced their actions on a message app called Telegram, stating that Italy’s “Russophobes get a well-deserved cyber response.”
An expert from Italy’s cyber security agency explained that this was likely a “Distributed Denial of Service” (DDoS) attack. In simple terms, DDoS attacks happen when hackers overload a website with too much traffic, which makes it slow or unavailable.
Fortunately, the cyber security agency quickly stepped in to help the affected institutions and businesses, and they managed to reduce the attack’s impact in less than two hours.
Despite the websites being down, there were no issues with flights at Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports. A spokesperson for SEA, the company that manages these airports, confirmed that their mobile apps continued to work fine.
