Lalu Yadav, the leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), paid tribute to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying that the country will never see someone like him again. He shared that he worked closely with Singh and believes he deserves to have a memorial built in his honor.
Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at AIIMS hospital in Delhi. Preparations for his funeral were taking place at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi’s Kashmere Gate, with the last rites scheduled for today at around 11:45 AM.
Singh’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, and daughter, Daman Singh, honored him at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters. Many politicians, like Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, also came to show their respect. People even gathered outside Singh’s home in Delhi to say their goodbyes. One resident, Jasmeet, said her family came to pay tribute to Singh, recognizing his role in making India well-known around the world.
The Delhi Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory to help ease congestion during the funeral. They reminded the public to avoid certain roads and consider using public transport.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah about building a memorial for Singh at a special location. Kharge expressed that a memorial would honor Singh, who rose from humble beginnings to become a respected leader of India.
Home Minister Amit Shah responded positively, saying the government would reserve space for the memorial. They mentioned that while the cremation and formalities are happening, a trust should be formed for the memorial’s construction.
Manmohan Singh’s career included being the Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, helping to change India’s economy. He served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, succeeding Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His time in office is remembered for steady leadership during tough times and improvements to India’s economy. After his second term, Singh stepped back from politics, leaving behind a legacy of growth and international prominence. He was succeeded by Narendra Modi in 2014 when the Congress party lost the elections.
