On Friday, Israeli fighter jets hit seven places along the border between Syria and Lebanon. The goal is to stop weapons from reaching Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran in southern Lebanon. In a recent operation, Israeli troops found a truck with a 40-barrel rocket launcher and other weapons, including explosives and automatic rifles.
Major General Tomer Bar, the commander of the Israeli Air Force, said Hezbollah is trying to bring weapons into Lebanon to see how Israel will respond. He emphasized that this cannot be allowed.
A ceasefire agreement made on November 27 said Israel should pull its troops out of southern Lebanon and that unauthorized Hezbollah military sites need to be removed. However, both sides blame each other for breaking the agreement, which was meant to end fighting that started after missile strikes by Hezbollah on Israel following a Hamas-led attack from Gaza on October 7, 2023.
The United Nations peacekeeping force recently asked Israeli forces to leave, claiming that they had violated the ceasefire. Israel has already destroyed much of Hezbollah’s missile inventory and is committed to preventing weapon smuggling from Syria.
Additionally, Israel has attacked the Iranian-backed Houthi movement in Yemen and promised to continue its fight against Iranian-supported groups throughout the region.
