Former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, has passed away at the age of 92 after being taken to AIIMS Delhi. Earlier this year, he retired from the Rajya Sabha, where he served for many years, and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge praised his long career.
Manmohan Singh was a key figure in changing India’s economy. He was the finance minister from 1991 to 1996, when he helped introduce important economic reforms that shifted India away from old socialist policies.
Singh was a member of the Rajya Sabha since 1991 and was Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004. He became Prime Minister on May 22, 2004, and again on May 22, 2009. Before his role as Prime Minister, he worked in various important government positions since 1971, including being the Chief Economic Advisor and the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Throughout his career, Singh received many awards. He was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 1987 and was named Finance Minister of the Year by Euro Money in 1993.
One of his most notable achievements was the 1991 Union Budget, presented during a challenging time for India. With a struggling economy and political issues, Singh introduced changes that opened up India to a more open and global economy, focusing on liberalization and privatization. This marked a big change in India’s path towards rapid economic growth, and his impactful speech about the budget is still remembered today.
