The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is upset after a 19-year-old student at Anna University in Chennai was sexually assaulted. They have accused the arrested man, Gnanasekaran, who is 37 years old, of being a “repeat offender and a DMK functionary.” He owned a biryani stall near the university. Police say he came onto the campus, attacked the young woman’s male friend, and then dragged her into some bushes where he assaulted her.

This scary incident has caused protests and discussions about how safe women are in Tamil Nadu. K Annamalai, the BJP president in the state, shared a picture on social media showing a DMK leader with the accused. He claimed there is a pattern where criminals link up with DMK members and are protected, allowing them to avoid punishment for their crimes.

Annamalai also said that the police do not investigate the accused because of pressure from DMK leaders, allowing him to commit more crimes. Protestors, including the Students’ Federation of India and the All India Democratic Women’s Association, gathered outside the university, demanding justice for the victim and better safety measures for students.

During this demonstration, several BJP leaders were detained by the police, including former governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. She said that this was wrong, claiming the police wanted to silence their protest. Annamalai also accused the police of leaking details about the survivor to protect the accused because he is linked to DMK.

DMK spokesperson A Saravanan responded, saying that just because someone is pictured with a party member does not mean the party is responsible for their actions. He assured that the police would take action against anyone who does wrong, but some people spread false information just because they cannot defeat the DMK politically.
