On Wednesday night, protests by students wanting to cancel the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) exam turned messy when police intervened. Bihar Police claimed they used “mild force” and said that no one was hurt during the event. Some police officers suggested that certain teachers were encouraging students to protest and named several social media accounts they believed were misleading students.
The protests have been happening in Gardanibagh since December 18, where many students have been asking for a re-examination of the BPSC’s 70th Combined Competitive Exam (CCE). DSP Anu Kumari mentioned that on December 23, a protester even damaged property at Gardanibagh Hospital. By December 25, many students gathered near the BPSC office, which caused issues for the public without permission.
DSP Anu Kumari stated that they had to use mild force to clear the area, and they are now taking action against those who led these protests. They have filed a police report regarding the vandalism and are sending notices to those involved in encouraging the protests.
Indian political party Congress criticized the police for their actions against the students. Meanwhile, independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, threatened to call for a statewide strike on January 1, 2025, if the BPSC 70th prelims held on December 13 are not canceled.
On December 24, BPSC announced that the Mains exam is likely to take place in April next year and asked students to focus on preparing for it. BPSC’s exam controller urged students not to be misled by confusing information and to prepare for the upcoming exams. The Patna district police are looking into the entire situation to take appropriate actions soon.
