Recently, Indian chess became very popular after young player Gukesh D won a big championship. His exciting win against the defending champion, Ding Liren, got everyone talking, especially in his hometown, Chennai. But while Gukesh is getting lots of praise, many other chess players in India aren’t getting the same attention.
One of those players is Tania Sachdev, a well-known woman chess player. She has been playing for India for over 15 years and recently shared her feelings on social media about how she and other players aren’t getting enough recognition from the Delhi government. She wrote, “It’s really disappointing to see that our achievements in chess are not recognized.”
Tania highlighted how other states celebrate their champions and that this helps inspire others to do better. She mentioned her achievements, like winning a team bronze medal in the 2022 Chess Olympiad and how there has been no recognition from Delhi for this success.
Tania, who was part of the team that scored gold in the upcoming Chess Olympiad in 2024, wants better support for chess players from Delhi. She tagged the Delhi government officials on social media, hoping they would see the value in supporting their local chess athletes. “As someone who proudly represents Delhi and India, I hope the leaders see how important it is to support chess players,” she concluded.
