On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was informed about a serious case involving a 19-year-old woman allegedly gangraped in Varanasi, his own constituency, where he had arrived to talk about new development projects.
Upon arriving, he spoke with local officials, including the police commissioner, and told them to take strong actions against those responsible for this crime and to create plans to stop such things from happening in the future.
In this incident, at least nine people were arrested and have been taken into judicial custody. The girl’s father shared that she had gone to visit a friend on March 29 and didn’t come home for several days, which worried her family. “We searched for her ourselves and later told the police on April 3. The police found her the next day in bad condition. After getting treatment, she told us what happened,” he explained.
The police reported that the victim was lured away and assaulted for over a week, claiming that 23 different men were involved. Her father stated, “She was given drugs multiple times and was raped. The number of men involved shows it was a planned attack. My daughter is a smart girl who wanted to pursue sports. I don’t know the accused.”
He appealed to Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, for justice, saying, “I don’t want the death penalty for them, but the punishment should be severe enough to make people think twice before doing such things.”
The lawyer for one of the accused confirmed that nine men have been arrested, but 11 others are still unidentified
