Onana Blamed as Manchester United Draws 2-2 with Lyon in Europa League

Andre Onana, the Manchester United goalkeeper, has faced strong criticism from Nemanja Matic, a former United player now with Lyon. Matic called Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history” before the game.

In the match, United took the lead but ultimately ended in a 2-2 tie against Lyon. The first goal came after Onana didn’t stop a free-kick from Thiago Almada, putting Lyon ahead. United equalized with a goal from Leny Yoro just before halftime. Later, a cross from Bruno Fernandes allowed Joshua Zirkzee to score a goal for United in the 88th minute, seemingly giving them a win. However, Rayan Cherki scored for Lyon right after, taking advantage of a mistake by Onana on a rebound.

Yoro expressed disappointment, saying, “We were winning 2-1, which would have been a great away score, but now we go back with a draw.”

Despite this match, United is still unbeaten in the Europa League. Winning this tournament could help them qualify for the Champions League since they are struggling in 13th place in the Premier League.

In other news, Tottenham also had a shaky game, ending in a 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt after going down early. In Norway, Bodø/Glimt surprised Lazio with a 2-0 win in challenging snowy conditions. Meanwhile, Rangers and Athletic Bilbao ended their match without any goals.

Chelsea is doing well in the Europa Conference League, winning 3-0 against Legia Warsaw with goals from Tyrique George and Noni Madueke. The other quarterfinal games saw Fiorentina win 2-1, Real Betis beat Jagiellonia 2-0, and Rapid Vienna won 1-0. The second legs of all matches will be next Thursday.
