Kolkata: There have been protests in Kolkata after a court allowed bail for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the former police officer in charge of Tala station. They were accused in the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor from RG Kar Hospital, which happened on August 9. The two men were charged with trying to hide evidence and helping to quickly cremate the doctor’s body, even though her family wanted a second autopsy.
The victim’s parents, as well as many doctors and political groups, took to the streets to demand justice for her. The victim’s father expressed hope, stating, “We will fight until we get justice. This legal battle and our protests will continue.”
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front organized a rally to the CBI office. A member of the group, Debasish Halder, voiced their concerns, saying, “Men like Ghosh should not get bail. We will not stop protesting until justice is served.”
Also, a group called the Socialist Unity Centre of India organized a protest. Their leader, Chandidas Bhattacharya, expressed disappointment with the CBI, stating, “We expected them to do more. We are shocked.”
Congress party workers held a protest outside the Nizam Palace, where the CBI operates, and students from the Students’ Federation of India protested in central Kolkata. The Joint Platform of Doctors, which includes various medical organizations, gathered for a rally at Esplanade, announcing that doctors and citizens would join in protests soon.
Dr. Utpal Banerjee, a member of the Joint Platform, said, “We are very upset. We will make our voices heard. The government and CBI need to ensure justice for the girl.”
The Service Doctors’ Forum has requested help from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This came after the CBI’s solicitor general stated that the Bengal government had not allowed them to prosecute Ghosh and Mondal. The forum asked for quick justice for everyone involved in the crime and for action against officials who hindered the CBI.
Also, senior lawyer Vrinda Grover, representing the victim’s family, has stepped down from the case. The victim’s father confirmed they are looking for another lawyer to continue their fight for justice
