The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday that all Indians who wanted to return from Syria have been safely evacuated. This comes after rebel forces overthrew President Bashar Assad’s government, causing unrest in the country. Assad has fled and is believed to be in Russia.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the MEA, said that 77 Indian nationals were brought back home. Among these, 44 were pilgrims from Jammu & Kashmir who were stuck in the city of Saida Zainab. They crossed into Lebanon safely and then took commercial flights back to India.

The Indian embassy in Damascus helped these citizens by accompanying them to the border, where the mission in Lebanon assisted with their travel arrangements and immigration. Most Indians have already returned, with the rest expected later today or by tomorrow. The 44 pilgrims have also left Beirut to visit other religious sites.

Jaiswal also mentioned that the Indian Embassy in Syria is still operating. Recently, India has called for peace in Syria and wants all groups to work together to keep the country united.
