New Delhi: The Indian Railways is taking important steps to avoid dangerous crowd situations at train stations and on trains. After a stampede on February 16, 2025, that led to the deaths of 18 passengers, the Railways is asking its divisions to create plans to manage large crowds effectively. Many local events, such as festivals, job exams, and sports matches, can cause overcrowding, which can lead to accidents.
The Railway Ministry has sent a letter to all 17 zonal heads, asking them to list upcoming events and guess how many people will attend. This will help the Railways prepare better for busy days. The letter, sent on May 1, 2025, also noted that divisions should have Senior Commercial Managers and Senior Security Commissioners work together on this task at least three weeks in advance.
The Ministry wants a proper plan for crowd management, which includes figuring out how many people will be traveling, what problems might come up, and what steps can be taken to help, like adding more trains, more security staff, and extra ticket counters to control ticket sales.
All General Managers have been instructed to make sure these plans are put into action quickly. The Railway Ministry emphasized that monitoring and coordinating between departments is key to ensuring safe and smooth train services during busy times.
