Delhi CM Gupta: Sanskrit is a Scientific Language with NASA’s Support!

On Sunday, Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that Sanskrit is a “scientific” language. She even claimed that NASA has praised it. Gupta made these comments while talking at a closing ceremony of a 10-day program where people were learning Sanskrit in the city.

She mentioned that “NASA scientists have written papers showing that Sanskrit is a scientific language. You can even write computer code in Sanskrit. It’s very friendly for computers,” she said. Her statement seems to come from a 1985 paper written by Rick Briggs, a NASA researcher. In this paper, Briggs explored how Sanskrit could be used like a language for computers and artificial intelligence.

Gupta pointed out a problem in society: we often think that speaking foreign languages like French or English means someone is smart. However, we don’t give the same importance to speaking Sanskrit. She said, “If a child speaks French or German fluently, we think that child is bright. But if a child speaks Sanskrit well, we don’t think it’s a big deal.”

According to Gupta, Sanskrit is very important for Indian culture and has influenced many Indian languages. She explained, “Every state has its own main language, but Sanskrit is like a mother language for all. Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Sindhi, Malayalam—these are all branches of Sanskrit.”

Gupta believes that if India wants to become a “Vishva Guru” (world leader), learning Sanskrit is essential. She announced that the Delhi government will make Sanskrit classes more accessible, especially in government schools.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra also attended the event. The Delhi government, along with the NGO Samskrita Bharati, has been offering free Sanskrit classes since April 23 at 1,008 places around the city including schools and temples. These classes focus on the basics of the language for two hours each day. Gupta hopes these efforts will help bring Sanskrit back into the daily lives and education of people.
