In a stunning move in sports, outfielder Juan Soto has agreed to a jaw-dropping 15-year contract worth $765 million with the New York Mets, according to reports. This deal is possibly the biggest in sports history! Just a few days ago, ESPN shared that Soto has chosen to leave the New York Yankees for the Mets.
Soto’s new contract beats Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal when he switched from the Los Angeles Angels to the Dodgers just a year prior. Soto’s contract also surpasses the total career earnings of famous athletes LeBron James and Tom Brady, which is $761 million combined!
The Mets’ owner, Steve Cohen, is known for spending big on players. In fact, he invested a record $341.8 million on his team’s 40-man roster for the 2024 season.
Juan Soto is an amazing outfielder from the Dominican Republic. He has played for teams like the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres. Soto signed with the Nationals as a young free agent in 2015 and made his major league debut in 2018. He was a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year Award that year. Soto played a crucial role in helping the Nationals win their first World Series Championship in 2019 and earned the Babe Ruth Award for his performance.
In 2020, he won the National League batting title with an impressive .351 batting average. Over his career, Soto has won the Silver Slugger Award five times and is a four-time All-Star. He is known for having excellent plate discipline, ranking fifth in baseball history for walk rate and 17th for career on-base percentage among players with at least 4,000 plate appearances by the end of the 2024 season.
During his rookie year in 2018, Soto became popular for his unique moves in the batter’s box. After he takes a pitch for a ball, he performs a fun dance called the ‘Soto Shuffle,’ where he swings his hips, brushes the dirt with his leg, taps his leg, hops, or squats while staring at the pitcher.
