Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan spoke positively about the growth of streaming platforms in India, calling it a “liberating” change for actors. He shared his thoughts during a discussion with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos at the World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES).
Saif noted that his work on Netflix has reached more people worldwide compared to his movies shown in theatres. He mentioned, “I get more calls from international peers about my Netflix shows than my theatrical releases. It feels amazing to know that people around the world are watching our stories.”
He feels streaming services allow actors to take on different roles and tell deeper stories. “Before, we had to stick to certain types of characters, but now we have the freedom to explore different roles,” he said.
Ted Sarandos supported this by saying that cinemas still matter and streaming and theatres can work side by side. Saif agreed and highlighted how stories connected to Indian culture are what he values most. “When people ask about my films, I love to talk about ones like Omkara or Parineeta, which represent our culture,” he shared.
Saif Ali Khan was the lead in Netflix’s first original Hindi series, ‘Sacred Games.’
The WAVES 2025 event is a major international gathering dedicated to the audio and entertainment industries, bringing together thousands of people, including creators and startups, from around the world. The four-day event started on May 1 and will go on until May 4.
