Liverpool fans made Anfield tremble with excitement during their thrilling win against Tottenham Hotspur! Scientists from the University of Liverpool found out that the fans’ cheers were so loud and energetic that they recorded small earthquakes inside the stadium.
The biggest shake happened when Alexis Mac Allister scored a powerful goal, giving Liverpool a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute. This caused a tremor measuring 1.74 on the Richter Scale! To capture this action, scientists used special tools normally used to measure earthquakes.
Dr. Antoine Septier, Dr. Farnaz Kamranzad, and Professor Ben Edwards led this interesting study. They set up a seismometer inside the Main Stand of Anfield, which can hold over 60,000 fans. The second-largest shake (1.60) occurred when superstar Mohamed Salah scored in the second half. There were also smaller shakes from goals by Cody Gakpo (1.03) and Luis Diaz (0.64).
Professor Edwards shared that this unique project allowed them to measure the incredible energy of the fans. “The fans’ passion was strong enough to move the Earth,” he explained. He hopes their findings inspire young people to explore science and understand Earth science’s role in building a better future.
After the exciting 5-1 victory, Liverpool’s coach Arne Slot praised the amazing support from fans. He said, “It’s incredible how our fans cheered for us during and after the game!”
Liverpool’s next match is against Chelsea on Sunday, May 4, and they will hold a Victory Parade on Monday, May 26.
