There’s a big protest happening in southern Mizoram, led by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP). They’re blocking two major roads: the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei (ATL) Road and National Highway 54(A) from Lunglei to Lawngtlai. Because of this, many people can’t get to where they need to go, and important supplies like food and water are getting hard to find.
The MZP started this protest three days ago. They want the government to give back ₹44 crore, which was supposed to be used for fixing the ATL Road. They believe that the state government unfairly took this money away.
Jerome Lalmuankima Hmar, the head police officer in Lunglei, said, “Protesters set up blockades on the main roads and it’s making life difficult for everyone.” Right now, there are about 225 vehicles stuck on these roads, including trucks carrying important supplies.
In response, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the government would try to provide more money as needed. He mentioned that they are looking at the ATL Road to ensure it gets better maintenance. But the MZP disagrees, saying the government should return the money instead. “They want to take away half of the funds. How will they find extra money?” questioned Lalpeksanga Chenkual, a student leader.
The MZP claims that out of the original ₹90 crore meant for the ATL Road, they took away ₹44 crore. They want this money back and expect the government to keep its promise to repair the road. Many groups have joined the protest, including local taxi owners and community organizations.
The Young Mizo Association, a big group in the area, also supports the protest. They want the government to solve this problem quickly for the people of Lunglei district.
The roadblock is causing issues for travelers, especially those needing medical help. So far, only one truck carrying medicines has been allowed through. The MZP has put up signs with the chief minister’s phone number for people in emergencies to reach out.
Police Officer Hmar said stranded truckers are running low on food and water, and they encouraged them to report their problems. Meanwhile, local groups have been providing free meals to those stuck because of the blockade.
